Good, because it means he's been there / done that / shot a bunch of dudes and so he's more likely to spend American lives a bit more judiciously than your standard neocon shithead would. But also potentially bad, because the US military has gone rather deep down the SF rabbit hole over the past few decades, to the point where some of the more conventional parts of the order of battle have been neglected to one degree or another. We need to pivot back at least a little bit toward the idea of fighting a near-peer enemy, and you can't really do that so much with just SF. Guy that's spent his entire career doing irregular warfare stuff, he might be a bit too stuck in that mindset.

I read earlier today that the new secdef won't take office till March of next year. Due to some rule that he has to be out of the military for 7 years before becoming a politician. Don't know how true that is, because it sounds stupid, but that's what I read anyways.

Not sure how it goes for an *acting* secdef, but when it comes to an actual *confirmed* secdef, it's true. They had to get a dispensation from Congress to have Mattis, because he hadn't been out of uniform long enough.

Concur, but, to a limited degree the DoD has shifted some* training focus towards near-peer vice insurgency focus. So a training focus overall has shifted to deal with force-on-force major conflict, the downside to that is few remain in the DoD that remember what that entailed in the big picture. Except for ancient troglodytes like myself, few in the DoD remember the cold war posture we had, how it operated and what it takes to do that again.

* until the deadliest virus in human history sidelined most training events by 80% or more.

An "acting" SecDef doesn't have those same restrictions. He can also be confirmed before that time limit is up with a congressional waiver.

ETA:  As acting SecDef he has, I believe it is, 220 days to be either get confirmed or replaced.

"Some training focus" isn't really going to help a lot.

Can you imagine trying to do REFORGER 87 with today's force structure? Even worse, can you imagine trying to do it with an actual red team?

If you want real nightmares, imagine trying to retake Guam with today's force structure.

I suspect that this is a chart of the flows of communication at the riots.  I also suspect that the larger nodes are the communication hubs or leaders.

Nothing highlights the fact that we don't live in an authoritarian (fascist) country more than the fact that these people only run the smallest risk of arrest.

In a real 'fascist' country--Argentina in 1975, for instance-- paramilitaries would be tuning them up in an abandoned warehouse someplace.  Once they got what information they could, the anarchists would get a bullet in the head and be dumped on the side of a logging road.
