I haven't seen 179 since I was 21y/o and that was 27 years ago. |

I live in Long Island and have been working in the city all of my adult life. Pre-Covid the city was a place that was definitely worth visiting at least once. Now I cannot recommend it at all unless you want to sharpen your situational awareness skills. I watched the city go from a pretty sketchy place pre-Giuliani to one that, outside of certain neighborhoods, was relatively safe. Now only two terms into Deblasio it's pretty much right back to pre-Giuliani in terms of sketchiness in more that a few spots. When the 'Rona hit, they moved the homeless out of shelters into hotels all over the city. Hells Kitchen was never great but post 'Rona that area along 8th ave in the 20's up to the 40's is definitely a place you want to keep your wits about you. The homeless that are passed out, nodding out from heroin you don't really need to worry about. The one's who are zonked on K2/Spice/synthetic MJ or the one's looking to beg/borrow/steal to fund their next fix are the one's you need to watch for. I have the misfortune of commuting into the city via Penn Station (34th 7th to 8th ave) and I ride a bike from the station to where I work - in part to avoid the subway and mostly because it's a form of exercise that I enjoy. Anyway a few weeks ago, I let my situational awareness slip after dropping of my bike (its a bikeshare bike so find a docking station and leave it) and I had one of the zombies get too close asking me for something. Best practice is to ignore them but he was persistent and I finally said something like "can't help you" to which he reacted poorly and took a swing at me. So I'm squared off as this guy is dancing around me saying he's going to take my stuff. Told him to go ahead and try. He got bored/gave up after a minute and moved on. FWIW I played football through high school (nose tackle) and rugby in college (tight head prop) - 6'2, 260lbs - so I'm not exactly a small guy. Granted I could lose 20 or 30 lbs but still - when the zombies are messing with guys my size you know they are desperate/crazy. So yeah - no reason to visit NYC anytime soon... If I get stuck in any protests in the coming weeks I will strive to get some kino pics or video for RS. |
