My favorite story about true democracy: Mytilenian Debate Basically in 427 B.C. Athens put down a revolt in the city-state of Mytilene, then got together to vote about that city's fate and said eh, fuck it, let's execute all the men and enslave the women and children. They dispatched a ship to carry the orders to their army occupying Mytilene. Meanwhile they executed 1,000 prisoners they had on hand since I guess their blood was up. The next day some of them came to their senses and gave impassioned speeches and the very same mob said eh, fuck it, let's show mercy instead. So they sent a second ship with the countermanding orders and the race was on to see whether thousands of people would live or die depending on the relative speed of the ships. As it happened the second ship got there in time. A lot of people have not thought through how awful it would be if a group like Congress or a state legislature could do anything it wanted as long as it had the votes. |
