That's their AOR - it's where they're supposed to be. It isn't like we don't still have Atlantic Fleet ships who can hot foot it to the Med via Gibraltar - the usual way of INCHOPing to 6th Fleet if needed. OK, Suez being closed will delay reinforcements and rotations to 5th Flt - either by going south around Africa, or going the looooooong way from the left coast across the Pacific and through the Indian Ocean, but we are the grand masters of at-sea logistic support - it is not really a challenge to the USN. I predict that EVER CLEAR will be out of the way and Suez reopened in a couple weeks - far sooner than it would take to move ships to the NAS via either alternate route. I think the challenge will be lightening the ship - there aren't any barge mounted cranes tall enough to get containers off the ship in it's current position. Seems the obvious solution is to use heavy lift helicopters to do it, and just set the boxes on shore, then truck them up to a Med port to be loaded on another ship at an Egyptian terminal. Nice piece of business for a few Egyptian companies, but an economic disaster for Evergreen. |
