All the staunchest opinions about EVs come from people who’ve never owned one or spent more than a minute doing research. They invariably concoct these straw man use cases that defy the reality of the majority of households with more than one vehicle in the fleet.

My aim is to replace the remainder of my household’s vehicles with EVs and buy one comfortable ICE vehicle that can tow/haul, off-road and long distance road trip out of the Supercharger network.

Rivians are awesome.  I’d buy one, except the charging network for my use case is not quite there.

BEVs only make sense as a short range commute car and then only for those who have ICE vehicles and who have a place to charge at home or at work.

Even then it's doubtful they are better than hybrids or better ICE vehicles.

The good news for Lucid is that they ARE experiencing considerable growth.

That bad news is that the most impressive growth is in their financial losses.

For 2022, Lucid had a net loss of $1.3 billion.  In 2023, they had a $2.8 billion net loss.  Impressive - but not in a good way.

Another fascinating way of looking at it is how much money they lose per each car they sell - given their net loss in 2023, that calculated out to over $200,000 lost PER CAR they sold in 2023.

At least Rivian "only" lost about $30,000 per car they sold in 2023.

I have a client with a Lucid, his dash (the entire thing) fell off while driving

Rivian has demand at least, but they need to crank out cars faster to get the loss per vehicle to gain. The shutdown next quarter is supposed to optimize the line to get higher production out, plus a new battery that supposedly cost thousands less. Their van is already profitable. They need to be looking good by end of Q3 and if not by Q4 they are probably done. Maybe they get lucky and score a big contract for the vans.

I reject the made up word "frunk".

Frunk is a horrible term, I feel like they just call it the boot.

My main issue with the Rivian is price and production.  Second is for the most part it does not fit a niche that I need to fill.  Weight of a full size in a mid size package - with a VERY non-impressive range towing anything from a lawnmower up.

There's a Rivian facility near us in Plymouth, so I see them all the time around this area.

They're ugly as fuck.  I honestly don't care how fast they are, I would never buy one until they revise their exterior appearance.

The same applies to the Cybertruck, for me, but at least Tesla makes enough normal looking vehicles that it doesn't matter as much for their bottom line.

My company is just down the road from Rivian and they are a costumer to us. Styling issues aside, Rivian has many, many teething issues to overcome before their future is secure. They still lack a significant amount of competent help in engineering, project and program management, and cost reduction.  My feeling is that they aren’t going to make it before the money runs out, and we are coming into a soft economy…. Not many people need a $100k, 1100hp AWD pet rock when they aren’t working. I hope they make it but I wouldn’t put my own money on them.

The market has fallen out for BEVs. That will be the nail in the coffin.

And in this case it's good for them to fail, since they were only ever just a bad investment, just like all the wind and solar for the grid.

I did some work for them a while back.  All of their tech/engineering workers were H1B's.

And it doesn't make sense to have an expensive car for dedicated commuting.

Specially as the market falls out, as is happening now.

BEVs were targeted at lefty virtue signalers and high tech fanboies, of which there is considerable overlap. But the result is expensive cars which don't make sense as a low cost commuter vehicle.

I guess "normal" is a subjective term.

The only Tesla I would want is that one that rapper had a V8 ice engine put into, and even then only to troll the green commies.

I think if i was going to ICE-swap a tesla... it'd be like 20B 3-Rotor pushing 750HP+.  Because nothing gives the finger to eco-weenies like pouring 2-stroke oil in your Teslas gas tank when you fill up.

And there you have it.
One man's dream vehicle is another's man's pile of poo.

Best of luck to you with that, you can have the Rivian that I will never buy.

I think a Cummins turbo-diesel Tesla conversion would be great too.

I work with two guys that have Rivians, one has an R1T, the other is the R1S. I've gotten to ride in both, and drive the R1S. The four motor R1S was awesome, acceleration is crazy, and has actually decent off road chops.

That being said: they have both had their cars bricked by over the air software updates that required their cars to be flat bedded to a service center. I'll embe sticking with a Lexus GX for the foreseeable future.

We had to drive across Dallas last week near rush hour. We decided to cut down Inwood Rd that slices across the upper class north side of town. We saw 3 or 4 Rivians.

Then we cut across the south side of town using MLK Blvd. We didn't see any electric cars of any sort down there.

They just need to start marketing to BLM.

Hybrids are good up until they need a new battery.  Then the resale value drops by a lot.

Resale hit is more than any fuel savings.

Monthly $ set aside for battery replacement is also more than $ fuel savings.

Hybrids make sense, because you can drive them indefinitely even if you can't plug them in.

Given how long most hybrid batteries last, particularly in Prius models, you are probably going to scrap the car before the battery is shot.  They are very popular as taxis apparently.

I think I've seen 2-3 Rivians. I have no idea what a Lucid even looks like. Pretty had to mistake a Rivian for anything else with that mongoloid looking front end.

About 2-3 Rivans around here. Seen one Lucid Air sedan. Those are quite nice looking. The high end one is 1200+hp and 0-60 in 1.8sec.

I watched that whole build series.

As I recall, the guy who built that is something of a leader in aftermarket third party Tesla repair. He built the V8 Tesla after getting pissed off that he couldn't buy a repair battery from Tesla to install himself on a salvaged flood car.

OK, I must have misunderstood that somewhere. He's a pretty interesting guy to listen to.

I would love to see more EV to Gas conversions. Like a Nissan Leaf with a Turbo 4 cylinder engine.
