I get movements from AliEx and have been using tokielab cases- best bang for the buck IMO.

I think I'll change the hands to more colorful, crazy shaped, ones.

well, this thread doomed me.  i now have $90/worth of watch parts on order in wolverine costume colors.

edit: is there a good overview of watch style/design around?  i default to divers, but would like to build a variety.

Pretty happy with my latest. 62mas conversion case, sort of a retroish thing.

So this has my interest as I'm about to replace a broken crystal in the seiko my wife gave me.

Would anyone be able to post a list of what parts you would need to buy to build a watch (or at least what compatibilty to look for)?  I looked on Ali and there is a lot and I have no idea who you know if things are compatible.
View Quote

Easier to find the watch you want to build and I'll provide some tips how to get there.

The following need to be compatible
  • Case
  • Crystal
  • Bezel
  • Bezel Insert
  • Dial
  • Movement
  • Hands
  • Band or Bracelet

Choose your case from AliExpress. Most common one is NH35, NH36, NH38, NH40, NH70 etc compatible and 28.5mm Dial compatible that comes with the bezel and bezel insert pre installed.  Get one of those.   If they offer the bracelet at the same time you like get it.
Choose your movement choice from above. About the features of the different NH Movements and 2nd Site
Get NH35 compatible dials and hands.
Get a bracelet or band that is compatible with your case.
If you go with a case without the bezel take note of the bezel size and go search form there.

Not easy.  That's an 37mm explorer style case with a 3.8 pm crown and a dial that normally comes without that day\date window.

Case: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804309363642.html - Crown at 3pm

Dial https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805826197829.html - No day date window, may need to be trimmed down .5 of an mm

Hands: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807064473700.html

If that case works then the dial will need to be sourced ... 28.5 in dial with day date window.

Edit to add :  another one no date though 28.5 https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256807189408086.html

Every thing came from off AliX.
Skx style case, NH35 movement, are the majors.
Dial, hands, and bracelet, just random finds I liked.
I can post links later on everything except the bracelet, if you'd like.

I paid under 10 bucks on sale and using coins.
Lots of info on YouTube on how to assemble. Just like an AR. I can't say build for either, as your just putting parts together.
This dial is only for NH35 or NH36 movements.  I'm enlarging the hole to use an NH34.
Good luck.
Oh, always, always, buy 2 sets of hands. You'll thank me later.
The seconds hand is a bitch.
If your going to make more, most catch the addiction, buy a large, lighted magnifying lens. I had one I used for reading my reloading scale and other old eyes duty. Also a pair of cheap, reading glasses. Get the highest magnifying you can find. The better you can see these tiny parts, the easier time you'll have putting them together.

If this works then I may try rolling my own.  Two questions:

Do you buy precut bezel 3m tape or is there a preferred method?

What about gaskets?  Are those needed to keep things water/dust air tight?

So you have all inspired me to finally get started and when I saw that parts could be sourced from Ali Express, I was not so concerned with damaging something during my learning curve.

I bought a movement a dial and a case, however none of the dial legs line up with the movement.  I think I need a different dial.

This is what I am going for, I am so close

There's probably 4 legs on the dial. You have to trim off the 2 you don't need to get the date window lined up with the stem.

You didn't say what movement you have, but if it's an NH35, with that case you have, these are the 2 pin positions you will need to use to line up at 3 o'clock.

I would give a swag that the pins at 12 and 7 are for a 6309 movement, and maybe the 1 just below the window, and directly across might be for an NH series movement.
Where, did you buy it from. The description will always say what movement it's for.
I'm looking at making a pilot watch next. Here's an ad that says this dial is for what movements.

I've been buying a few small items, but waiting on a sale.
