I’d hate to speculate, yet I can’t help it. If you’re going to climb, find an at least equal partner.

They were roped up. Unless you're awesome at self arresting, if you go, your partner's going, too.

ETA - it's my assumption they were mountaineering, not rock climbing.  They probably didn't have any more protection than an ice screw or a picket here and there. Running belays are inherently dangerous.

He consistently had near peer climbing partners.  100% that added to his success.  Your post makes no sense.  Do go on.

If you have a partner with equal or greater climbing experience, self arresting and even crevasse rescue greatly increases chances of survival.

I do mountaineering in 3 man teams, I get that this was an easy alpine pass so 2 people made sense, but if you aren’t at least equal, it no longer does.

For belaying, if you have a weaker or drastically lighter belayer on top or bottom rope belay, it’s a life and death matter.  It’s just fucking dumb.

The "Escalator" route on Mount Johnson, according to the NPS. PHOTO: NPS.GOV

The "Escalator" route on Mt. Johnson. The "X" indicates the approximate location of the rescue of the surviving climber, the NPS said. NPS.GOV

One mountain climber is dead and another is injured after the two-person team fell 1,000 feet while climbing in Alaska on April 25.

According to a press release from the National Park Service, two climbers — identified on April 27 as 52-year-old Robbi Mecus and an unnamed 30-year-old California woman — were attempting to scale Mount Johnson, an 8,400-foot peak in Denali National Park, when they fell, resulting in the death of Mecus and the other woman sustaining serious traumatic injuries.

According to a previous press release from the NPS, the two climbers were attempting to take a route up the mountain known as "the Escalator" at Preserve's Ruth Gorge, which involved a "steep and technical" 5,000-foot climb amid rocks, ice and snow on the southeastern side of the peak.

You came out with a dumb comment about 2 people you know nothing about, or their climbing experience and implied it was the woman's fault.

So answer the question. Who was incompetent, the one that fell or the one that didn't catch the one that fell?

Okay, let me explain it to the people who don’t know, and this applies to more than just mountaineering, but it will be directed towards mountaineering.

When you bring a far less experienced person on a climb, the vast majority of the time, the more experienced person is actually putting themselves at a higher risk than the new person.

I highly prefer a 3 man team, it helps to overcome a lot of mishaps.  Again, I get the 2 man ascent for this climb, but you have to be equally experienced and worthy.

Interesting. From the pictures of the route in this thread, it looks like a lot of mixed climbing. Maybe it's because I'm on my phone, but I can't find the route on summitpost or mountainproject. I'm sure the NPS will eventually publish some details of the accident, or maybe it'll be in the AAJ's Accidents next year.
