Export variant, not as bad, but still bad to have that kind of thing happen. As referenced above, there are special shipping agents that are cleared to handle classified parcels. This isn't something you go down to the local post office for, they have officers standing around making sure things are packaged up correctly, and everyone is in view of the object, etc. The devil is in the details: it is not an existential threat to the F-35 program. Recent reports confirmed that a commercial UPS shipment containing an unserviceable F-35 cockpit canopy and a weapons-bay door from a Royal Australian Air Force jet was inexplicably diverted to Hong Kong while en route to the U.S. for inspection, repair, or disposal. No Software or Advanced Avionics: China did not get a functional "cockpit" or an export version of the jet's electronic brain, source code, radar, or combat systems. They obtained a physical, unserviceable acrylic canopy (the clear windshield/bubble covering the pilot) and a weapons-bay door. This is the part that sucks, but many countries still haven't been able to replicate how we make coatings for things like the F-117 yet either. Radar-Absorbing Material (RAM): Both components are coated with Lockheed Martin's proprietary stealth materials. This is the most sensitive aspect of the breach. China can physically scrape, reverse-engineer, and chemically analyze the precise composition of the radar-absorbing paint and film coatings. U.S. officials and congressional lawmakers launched immediate investigations Manufacturing Limits: Knowing what a material is made of does not mean a nation can easily mass-produce it at scale. Advanced aerospace manufacturing requires proprietary industrial baselines and chemical processes that are exceptionally difficult to copy from a single sample Different Tech Philosophies: China relies on different radar-absorption strategies than the United States, meaning a direct one-to-one copy of U.S. chemical layers may not fit cleanly into Chinese production lines. |
