The submarine seems a bit superfluous if the torpedoes are themselves intercontinental.

We can barely build Virginia class subs at the moment. I'm not optimistic that a Colombia class SSBN will ever be constructed.

This nations most essential infrastructure has been looted and rotting for years under the lash of certain people siphoning monies into their offshore accounts.

When one is above the law some really interesting crimes can be committed.

The only real way to stop this torpedo is another nuke, or drive something right infront of it.

The Poseidon Intercontinental underwater drone / autonomous torpedo is Bond Villainy level stuff.

It can't "destroy" a city, but it can absolutely make it highly irradiated & unlivable.

The Bikini Tests (Able & Baker) showed that the air shot (Able) did damage, but the underwater shot (Baker) launched a huge highly radioactive spray all over the target area that the countermeasures couldn't clean off.

You may make a mess of the harbor & waterfront (Nuclear Tsunamis!), but the extreme radiological factor of the attack would be huge & deadly for a city like Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Honolulu, Seattle or similar.

The fact that they've put the effort i to delivering warheads via torpedo leads me to believe one of two things:

1) They have much more faith in our ABM capabilities than I do; or
2) They've really just embraced the whole James Bond villain thing.

This.   I mean seriously.  Yeah super scary torpedos.  But im sure we will know where its at all the time.  Probably the first target in the water if things went hot.  Kind of hard to launch a torpedo when your giant sub is imploding and filling with water.

Two nuclear reactors in the sub, another nuclear reactor in the midget sub, given Russia's track record with nuclear submarines that's not the best odds.

Actually, that's a really good idea.  After so many subs sinking and no way to find or rescue the crew, this at least gives a shot at survival.  A deep sea rescue sub as part of the equipment is a genius level idea.  Could also be used to explore certain underwater sites without a service ship being visible.

I wonder what the mini sub underneath is meant for.  Possibly surreptitious entry to ports to cause mayhem, then sneak out again?

Their new stuff is supposedly pretty close to being on par with ours from an acoustic standpoint.  They don't spent a lot of time at sea tho, so presumably, our crews have a strong advantage.
