You can access regular internet with Tor browser, your just not totally anonymized and these sites don't save user data.  Opening and SSL link to regular internet will keep your traffic between that server and the tor router very short and difficult lo do anything, honestly, they'd only go that far if you were suspected of mass murder or something.   However, once they build their dozens of data centers, that rule may change.  If you are 20 of the 100,000 searches a day all from a different IP due to changing exit nodes, you're save and good to go.  The problem is these sites don't provide tor links as so you need to hop from Tor to regular internet at some point.

P.S.  Yes, Google is better.   Listen to his latest speech, sometime this year or late last year.  Google is profiling you so you're only going to get answers they want you to see, pure manipulation by making you think that content outside their worldview  exists, or they will be doing that and are on their way.   These sites are something you should give a try, specially kagi, it has a google type interface and is very fast with answer apolitical and religion neutral.   I've stayed up like 4 hours extra to test these more and update my posts a bit.  I'm actually impressed for once and am happy that google and bing don't keep shoving stuff in my face, even when using duckcuckgo, its just an anonymized  like running on the tor network, but it still guesses and once ll the data centers the are working on are built, tor won't be an issue because they'll have enough processing power and for all we know, there's a backdoor in browser we don't know about, such as a standard library that isn't edited unless you are a close to the metal systems programmer and I wouldn't doubt a grey (dark dark gray) volunteer is maintaining one of the sockets for traffic which can be redirected to somebody who cares and has a crapload of hard drive space and processing power to break SSL encryption.

That's the paranoid take on it, though I could go a few steps further are you planning on google telling you how to make a better rocket fuel or an Iranian warhead.  That is when they'll come and burn down your house with you in it.
