He brought the Latin bossa nova music to mainstream. I once saw a concert by the Lani Hall(wife of Herb Alpert, yeah the Apert of A&M Records), she was one of the singers in that group)

Dig that bossa nova beat, man!

Usually have bossa nova playing in the background in my house.

I like Sergio Mendes (and his various bands and recordings). RIP.

But for me, the godfather of 1960s-1970s samba/bossa nova is Antonio Carlos Jobim.

LOL, that's a great point. And don't forget the high, very cool air conditioning and the smell of Jade East of Brut cologne that you splashed on before you jumped in your vehicle.

Sports Car music, I grew up with this.

Delta, like most airlines at the time, used to have tape decks on the aircraft that would play melodies like these. Remember service was a thing back then.

Remember coming into CVG on a Delta DC-9 while Jobim's Wave was playing on the PA system.

That time when Harrison Ford was a carpenter building Sergio Mendes’ recording studio in 1971.

I was 11 in 1966 and remember the music of Herb Alpert and Sergio Mendes being everywhere. My parents had the Stan Getz album with Jobim's classic Girl From Ipanema.

I had a huge crush on a girl in my 5th grade class. I wore so much of my dad's Jade East Cologne on Valentine's Day, that my desk smelled like that cologne for days afterwards.

I spent so much time talking to this girl that our teacher moved my desk to the other side of the classroom!

Not Sergio but this is the first bossa nova song I learned on guitar

Huge hit from the '80s, with as many chord changes to match. . .

I got some Sergio Mendez vinyl kicking around here, as well as Stan Getz, Astrud Gilberto, etc.  I was crushed when Lani Hall married Herb Alpert (although I got my share of Tijuana Brass albums, too.)

XM used to have a Brazilian Jazz station, and eventually replaced it (and other jazz channels) with rock stations so there could be even more Skynyrd on the airwaves.

I believe she just walked into the studio one day when her husband was recording and casually sang something.  The rest, as they say, is history.

Unlike other “artists” who have passed recently—— Sergio made real music and will be missed.

So true.

Listen to Sergio Mendes all the time and it takes me back to the
60's and 70's and childhood. His stuff was always around.

That should have been the song the Blues Brothers band played in the redneck bar scene.

I could see that same exact thing happening.
