I’ve told my story before, but for those that don’t know. I played guitar from about 12 years old till about 22-23 years old. I’m now 52 and restarted this past Christmas. In just over 3 months I’ve written and recorded all these songs. I’ve got a long way to go to get back to where I was but I’m putting in the work several hours a day. I’m into extreme metal so my music isn’t for everyone but I’m convinced writing songs is more important than solos. I’m also big on not stressing over perfection when recording songs. Nothing wrong with doing multiple takes to get a good one. Just don't modify anything to move it to the grid or strive perfection or it will sound unnatural. I even program my drums with intentional small imperfections and vary velocities as well to make them sound more human. Also if you have a good song it's going to work right away so if you are spending months tweaking on it to get it right it's probably not as great of a song as you think it is. I just write as many riffs and put as many songs together as I can and let them fall where they may. Some may end up shit or not come together right away if they aren't good songs then just throw it out and move on rather than stick for months working on the same song. Just my opinion and I admit I'm not even a good guitar player. I think of the guitar as a tool in the song writing process. I see guitar players way better than me never write songs and only spend hundreds of hours learning to improvise in any scale or mode in any key. That is cool but the solo is a minor and not even necessary part of most songs that only a small percentage of listeners give a shit about. It's like spending your whole life how to make frosting without ever learning how to bake a cake. In fact if you want to solo all day over backing tracks at least start writing/recording your own backing tracks. None of this is directed at you or anyone here just my opinion based upon what I see from guitar players on the internet. Really amazing players with a lot of technical skill but they don't really do anything with it because they aren't writing/recording songs. |

New song I wrote and recorded this weekend. Just took a riff from my collection which ended up being the intro riff for this song. I just took it from there, programmed a drum beat and built on that and the intro riff until I had a song.
