Was watching some court show and an alibi involved the NYC Eruv being repaired. I didn't know about this until I saw this show. And I lived in NYC for a few years.
It's called the Eruv. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruv Cliff notes - Jews can't leave the house on certain days but they put a string around their neighborhood and call their house and now they can move around within the string. (i think) I don't know why Jews don't like my neighborhood which was Hell's Kitchen but oh well.

They have customs like not being able to use electricity for certain periods for some reason. They have all sorts of work arounds apparently.
