That's why I still have it after 10 years. |

Did I just kill another thread?

Shoots like a dream. One of the few revolvers I have that I like to carry. |

I understand the solid non fluted cylinder is a good look but that extra weight will tend to work against you when shooting double action. The theory is you have to work a bit harder to get that extra mass moving.
This is why most serious revolver guys insist the K or L frame trigger is lighter and smoother than a N frame. For the average non revolver geek the difference is pretty small I would think. |

Damn. Every time I see a 686 thread it gets me all excited about finding one. Prelock 3” is my fetish. Had one in my hands years ago and I handed it back to the counter jockey instead of buying it. Dumbass.

Back in the 80s my first duty weapon was a 4” 686. That thing was a tack driver! I wish I had never sold it. Quite a few firearms I regret selling when I was young. Lesson learned.

Did they make a pre-lock 7 shot? I sure hope not or I will be paying way too much nowadays.
I had bought all of the pre-lock moonclip guns and sold all but the 625 off after the novelty wore off. A 686 is a lighter gun than my N frames. |

View Quote If I do my part, that gun can be real accurate. A couple of weeks later I saw the 4 inch 686-4 at a lgs for 749 or 799. Went back the next morning to get it, and it was gone. If you can find one, buy it. |

View Quote Yes 686-4 was made in both in six and seven shot variants pre lock. But as far as I can tell the seven shot was only in 2.5, 4 and 6 inch barrel length, not in 3". That's why I made my own. |

View Quote I love my 4" 686. I don't have the + model though. 4" K frames really are the sweet spot for me in revolvers. I've got a model 19 as well as the 686 and they are both a pleasure to shoot. I have an N frame Highway Patrolman (mod 28), it's just a bit too heavy. |

They're gorgeous revolvers! Nice pickup, OP.

I didn't know they made the unfluted in a 6". They started with the 3-5-7 series and had 3"-5"&7" barrels and unfluted cylinders. I went with the 5" then ended up with a 2.75 that has the same grips but a normal fluted cylinder I picked up off my brother. |

I have to admit I miss the moonclips Just wish there was a simple safariland type speedloader Ive tried HKS and they are okay. Through use they crack and stop letting rounds drop free. They are cheap enough though. Just hate that its not self activating Ive also used the SL variant. Its self activating like the HKS. The con on this guy is that rounds can drop free if the rounds get pushed sideways. I can generally pocket carry one and keep all the rounds but every now and again Ill pull it out and one has came out of the loader. I havent tried the speed bees yet |

Sharp looking gun, I have a couple 4” guns, arguably my favorite wheel guns.
|
|
|
I’ve got a 4”, 5” and 6” but my 3” is a SP101. I think I need a 3” 686.
|
|
|
Now the real question
Is a 3" 686 considered a snub nose? |

I can come pretty close to the Martin Riggs "smiley face" at ten yards shooting single action. Police trade in, too. Glad you're swapping grips OP, those don't do it justice. Little polish and she'll be a beauty. I'd love to have a 3", it would probably go into my carry rotation. I sent these Ahrends to MiamiJBT as a gift 'cause they just didn't speak to me, and put the factory Hogues back on it. One of these days I'm going to find a nice set of smooth medallion grips for it.
