 It’s not too often I buy something really cool that I feel I have to share, but here I am. I was looking for an area rug and searched online for cow hide rugs. These things are amazingly cheap. About $150 for a 6x7 rug. I even purchased matching pillows. Outside of my man space smelling like a cow, it’s a pretty cool look. |

Ours is about 1.5 years old and has put up with gsd, boston terrier puppy and vacuum abuse and still lays flat although it's starting to show some wear. Attached File |

The cowhide rugs used to be a $200-400 problem. Glad prices are coming down, they are cool. Do be careful as if a tear starts on the edge, it will extend very quickly with the slightest pressure. Don't shuffle your feet. If anyone wants to get extra sporty, Nguni cowhide rugs are from a cattle species unique to Southern Africa and have different colors and patterns than our cows. I was looking at cheap rugs from Walmart and Home Depot but the prices for around $200-$300. My hide was only $150. It takes the vacuum without issue. It’s starting to lay flat, I’ve had it for about two months ago. I’ve read where some people iron them, haven’t tried that. I just figure it’ll get flat in time. |

I had a buffalo hide on my carpet in living room and it slowly leached out and made the carpet “greasy” and looked off. This is what I am after. I put in hickory floors and don't want to mess up the finish. |

It's usually a simple sheet of felt with a couple inches beyond the hide border. It greatly helps to prevent tearing at the edges, and I say that as someone that has accidentally torn someone's zebra hide.  I would limit the felt backing from sticking out too much on a cowhide as they aren't normally felt-backed. Here's a giraffe fragment on felt as an example.  |
