I was kidding . I know exactly nothing about these matters. Last plane I flew was a ME262 about 23 years ago from my computer in my workout room.

It has been a couple decades since I went to the Sandia course, but in 1990s-era weapons there were something like 120 operations that had to be executed in order and sequence and in correct timing in order for a nuclear yield to be achieved.

There are layer upon layer of "nuclear surety features" which ensure that they are only released by specifically authorized personnel under specifically authorized conditions and circumstances. And, if those features are attempted to be spoofed or bypassed, the weapons very conveniently render themselves quite inert and useless.

Good luck with the iPad, though.

There have been some really fun designs that entered service.  We had the Mk 101 nuclear depth bomb that would have detonated at the set depth if it had ever fallen off an aircraft and rolled overboard.

they really don't. They're still nuclear explosions.  They just kick out a bunch of a type of radiation that will penetrate things better and make previously non-radioactive things radioactive.

Enhanced radiation weapons.

Just like a gun fight at the movie theater, you can not start one all you want and still find yourself in the middle of one whether you are armed or not.

The bombardier...or a specialist had to insert half the "pit" (gun style so not really a single pit) after they were safely in the air on the way to Hiroshima.

Modern bombs start with an implosion fission bomb,(fat man)  that then creates the physics required to produce fusion.  Lots of shaping and lensing of xrays and neutrons, math and shit, I think there is some plastic foam involved....physical forces we cannot create outside of a super collider or tokamak reactor......add in some tritium for that extra kick, or make some stuff out of lithium-6.....(looking at you shot Castle Bravo) Viola!  How big of a hole do you want?  Fusion bombs scale really well, whereas fission bombs have a practical limit where the material is physically dispersed by the explosion before it can all react. Over a certain size you're just making the boom dirtier.

But it all starts with some very precisely shaped explosive blocks detonated in very precise order.   Takes special switches just to function accurately enough.   If you can trigger those switches correctly, the rest will go boom to one degree or another, likely with a nice multi-stage pop.

So you don't need fancy nuclear assurity and security systems,  if you have knowledge and resources I'm sure you could rig something eventually. It's a hell of process to figure out given the results of a successful test.   it's not practical to do in tactical field expedient time frame,  and that's probably about as secure as it will ever be.

Practically speaking Mach couldn't lose his shit, hang a left from Edwards and crater downtown LA. (not that they were doing testing with live bombs)  The entire triad of strategic weapons has similar safeguards.

Not sure how the one they strapped to Billy Waugh as he jumped out of perfectly good airplane was safeguarded.  But that was a thing at one point.

But then there are radiological weapons. You want to get nervous? Look into how many cesium source irradiators are out there, and how easy they are to open up and remove the source. Tape a couple of pucks of that nice friable material onto an ANFO truck bomb and voila! You've made real estate worthless. The actual radioactive effects aren't big, but psychologically?

orphan industrial sources have been lost/stolen/melted in the past. A steel mill down the road from the foundry where I was head of safety and the radiation safety officer melted a shielded medical device that had source material in it.  That was quite the mess apparently. mini mill that recycled scrap.

The scrap industry does a decent job of screening materials, and most melt operations have sensitive portal scanners for screening the incoming material for that reason.  We Installed the same units the US uses at border crossings.

we had a portable x ray fluorescence material analyzer that used Americeium 241 and cadmium 109. Government licenses those sources mostly so they get disposed of safely. I don't remember exactly but the half life of one of those is hundreds of years.

They found a source on the side of the road in Texas ...not that long ago.  The oil industry uses them extensively and they can be much more dangerous materials.

it way more common than people think.

Okay, correction, they sent the signal to go pop up to a depth where normal VLF or satellite comms could be used.

Nevertheless, it's worth noting that Russia, India, and China are all using or building ELF stations...and the US has conspicuously not done so for twenty some years now. Our boomers are just so quiet that they don't worry about coming up for radio traffic? If we switched to something better, obviously no one who knows would admit to it on a public forum.

The U.S. has asked that the Polish defense minister's visit to the Pentagon be canceled

The visit to the Pentagon by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz, scheduled for Wednesday, will not take place. This is due to an urgent request from the U.S. side.

Kosiniak-Kamysz had previously announced that he intended to discuss with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hagsett, in particular, the issue of a permanent U.S. military presence in Poland. Discussions were also expected to cover the deployment of a PAC-3 missile service center in Poland.

However, as RMF FM has learned, Vladyslav Kosiniak-Kamysz’s visit to the Pentagon, scheduled for Wednesday, will not take place. It will be rescheduled for a later date.

Following the release of this information, the Ministry of National Defense issued a statement announcing that, due to an urgent request from the U.S. side, the visit will be rescheduled.

“The date is currently being coordinated. In light of signals from the U.S. side, as well as following the meeting of NATO Chiefs of Staff, it is now necessary to urgently take new measures regarding the security of Alliance countries. Deputy Ministers Magdalena Sobkowiak-Charnecka and Paweł Zalewski are traveling to Washington. They will hold talks with U.S. partners and prepare new agreements regarding our cooperation,” the Ministry of Defense stated.

This was reported by RMF FM.

As a reminder, Poland has received a new shipment of American Abrams tanks.

Poland aims to host up to 15,000 U.S. troops, according to the Anadolu Agency.

Poland will supply weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces using a 90-billion-euro EU loan.

Poland has already allocated the entire EU loan for rearmament even before receiving the funds

The Polish government has decided to challenge the European Union’s trade agreement with South American countries in the Court of Justice of the European Union.
