Does anyone have a source for used or refurbished iPads or similar tablets suitable for an Autistic child, at a price point that would not rule out frequent replacement from inevitably being dropped or stepped on? The only requirement we would have of the device would be to access YouTube Kids, absolutely nothing else. I have two nine year-old grandsons, identical twins, with severe Autism. They are beautiful little boys, but they are non-verbal and will need constant care for the rest of their lives. They are learning to use speech devices to communicate to some degree, but unfortunately the iPads, because of that software, are very expensive, so the boys are only allowed to use them during therapy sessions or under close supervision so they don't get damaged. Both boys love to play outside, climbing, swinging and running around, but when they can't play outside, they enjoy watching things they find on YouTube Kids, and it gives their mother (my daughter) some desperately needed break time. Any suggestions would be great. |

Two members donated their older model iPads and both are in service again. One will run YouTube Kids, one won't but we found some ways to cope with that. I hope these two last awhile. We've tried several options over time, but the boys are just hard on stuff. It's frustrating, but it's not their fault. They just don't know any better.

To the OP, My son is autistic as well, he has had I-Pads and android tablets for years. A lot of the social / medical aid networks, will assist, programs through Medicare/medicaid and other services out their for special needs kids, like Deaf and Blind Services, ( my son is considered both, even though he can see and hears with Cochlears) there are a lot of good programs out there, my wife fights for all of them! Every few years they will send us a new I-Pad for him to use. The other thing that i would recommend is the foam rubber style cases, they work great and have kept most of our tablets safe for the most part, we have had the broken screens, but screen protectors and the foam style cases designed for rough use work pretty well. I would buy multiples, since they are foam the kids tend to chew them or pick at them and tear them up pretty easily. Of course teaching them to take care of it or it gets put up goes a long way, they learn slower and differently, but they will learn! Also just beware of Youtube Kids, some stuff makes it on their that shouldn't be, and also kids learn quick to find regular YouTube, so parental controls and watching what they are doing is a constant when they start "surfing" Here in Texas i asked my wife she said to just ask your therapists and social programs like this one https://www.dsswtx.org/ maybe something similar in your area?? |
