Someone posted a meme of the raptor engine evolution with each version being a more simplified and streamlined. The fourth version was a toilet plunger.
I always think of it when new versions of the engine are shown.

Bro, Atlas V engines:

The amount of work required to simplify the Raptor engine, internalize secondary flow paths and add regenerative cooling for exposed components was staggering.

As a result Raptor 3 doesn’t require any heat shield, eliminating heat shield mass & complexity, as well as the fire suppression system.

It is also lighter, has more thrust and has higher efficiency than Raptor 2.

Truly, a work of art.

That's a lot of fiddly bits.

Raptor 3 looks like a masterpiece of engineering. Yesterday illustrated that for the foreseeable future our civilization is going to have to get better at managing heat.

Important to note that the induced mass (mass required by a given engine design that is not the engine itself) of Raptor 3, while far better than Raptor 2, still has a lot of room for improvement.

Thrust will exceed 300 tons with Raptor 3.x (thrust/mass>200), enabling 10,000 tons of thrust at liftoff and there might be up to 5 sec of Isp gain over time.

Getting close to the limit of known physics.

Elon really does like to push things to the absolute limits. I remember some years ago hearing Eric Weinstein saying that we should be working on gravity drives instead of better rocket engines.

Maybe a gravity drive would be easier than this?

Performance stats of previous versions:

Raptor 1 (sea level variant)
Thrust: 185tf
Specific impulse: 350s
Engine mass: 2080kg
Engine + vehicle-side commodities and hardware mass: 3630kg

Raptor 2 (sea level variant)
Thrust: 230tf
Specific impulse: 347s
Engine mass: 1630kg
Engine + vehicle-side commodities and hardware mass: 2875kg

Raptor 3 is designed for rapid reuse, eliminating the need for engine heatshields while continuing to increase performance and manufacturability

So the mass budget for two R3s is still less than the budget for an R1?

Unreal.

50% more thrust and half the weight, that is insane improvement

Yep, so many advances by Space X just leaving everyone else in the dust! They're an incredible team!

It's no wonder why everyone with a vested interest in old space, and the newer programs that simply can't keep up, are trying every underhanded trick under the sun to stop them.

They did that with a recent Falcon 9 second stage.  It was interesting watching the LOX vaporize when it hit the engine plume.

Sure, just bet everything on pulling a bunch of completely new branch of physics out of a hat on demand.

If we eventually get gravitics and FTL, that will be amazing. But to put everything else on hold until having them is beyond stupid. Especially since by definition we don't know if some key insight can only come after we've spread off world, let alone if they are possible.

From Wikipedia:

At full power, all engines produce a collective 74.4 MN (16,700,000 lbf) of thrust as of 2022 (more than double that of the Saturn V first stage), however, Raptor 3 may increase thrust to 90 MN (20,000,000 lbf) at sea level.

There's an old belief that if a plane "looks right" then it will probably fly well.

With each design iteration everything about Starship looks more and more right.

He had a video a couple of years ago where individuals had to put their names on any project so they could always know where to go / who to ask when something came up - reason being they had a part on something that came from an intern for some unknown reason.  And like you say, "Do we really need this" is question 1 they always ask and 2 is "Can we eliminate it anyway?".

Well... I suppose now I have heard several neuroscientists, phycisists and an orbital rocket company CEO say about things well inside their respective realms of expertise.

"That... Shouldn't be possible."
