First real job the owner had one parked in the garage attached to the office, he used it for tailgating at football games.

Very deep cover...

I did a double take when I saw the green as I zipped by on the highway. Drove slower the next time I went by and yep, thats what it was.

I couldn’t believe it when I passed by it. I about wrecked our car turning around to take a picture.

Front wheel drive, in-line tandem rear wheels, fiberglass monocoque body...

Half a century later, they're still ahead of their time.

Isn't the FWD / Engine basically the unit out of the Cadillac Eldorado?

Not sure how much I'd like that in the snow & hills with FWD on that beastie!

It's the Oldsmobile Toronado drivetrain.  I worked on a few back in the day and like ALL motorhomes, they are a real bitch to work on.  Would not have one for free.  Doubt parts would even be available anymore.  It's basically late 70's early 80's tech.

My mom had an ‘84(?) model Toronado.

I remember dad veering off the road on some ice one day and I was so impressed with how the front wheel drive pulled back out of the ditch.

Yeah, around 1990 there was a Mondello catalog with one doing a burnout.

Most motor homes of that era are a pain to do anything more than a tune up. With a modern efi setup very little work should be needed.

Yep, the difficultly in getting them serviced is one reason to avoid Class A motorhomes in general.

A lot of mechanics simply refuse to work on them - Cramped engine compartments, marginal powertrain and suspension for the weight, electrical and exhaust parts slapped on randomly, no factory documentation for most brands - and they're too big to fit in many service bays, and too heavy for some lifts to handle.

My dads got one. Previous owner Mickey Moused a lot on it and he’s done endless work on it, but he absolutely loves it. The visibility when driving is amazing. He once drove it into a cramped coffee shop parking lot with ease. Swore he’d never make it.... I still compliment him on that.

My Dad had a early Olds Toronado with the BIG V-8.

It was a space age vehicle for it's time, with the Hidden Pop Up Headlights, Streamlined body design, High Tech 'Drum' Speedometer and full set of gauges along with "Oh Oh" lights as back ups...

I remember him being in a hurry and stomping on the accelerator and big white clouds of tire smoke came streaming back from the front wheels.
