Are these ball valves any better than the old fashion stem valves?   I've replaced many with stem valves, but after a couple of years they never really shut the water off all that well and ended up shutting the water off at the meter.

Ball valves rule. There's not one gate or globe valve left on my property.

The only thing gate valves are good for is flow control. 1/4 turn full flow ball valves are what you want for on/off applications.

If your water has the tendency to cause problems with ball valves that sit unused for great lengths of time you could implement a periodic schedule to go around and exercise the valves perhaps 1x/ 3months. When you tested your water, what was the hardness level?

Gate valves always get rotted out, either the packing or gate, by hard water. Typically, gates also leak around the stem, especially if a rising-stem.

Full-port ball valves are the way to go for most applications, including domestic water.

All valves will fail if not exercised, or given enough time in general.
