While her abdication is a surprise, its not because of any controversy. She's 83 & stepping aside so her son can assume the crown. Sounds like a class act by someone that legitimately wants the best for her country.

This is definitely a huge surprise.
 Traditionally in Denmark, the monarch serves until they die. That said, I can understand why she is abdicating. She is getting old, has been the monarch for over 50 years, and it's a good time for a transition. |

I just have a connection to the family because I served in her personal guard regiment (and as an officer there would occasionally interact with her, at formal dinners, etc.). I also briefly served with both of the Princes - but didn't really know either of them. Frederik was a sergeant in the Royal Guard when I was a recruit, so I occasionally had him as an instructor. When I was in sergeant's school, Joachim was also there, but he was in an earlier cohort, so the only time we met was going drinking together a couple of times (as part of a group). Not only has she had some health problems recently (including a big back surgery earlier this year), but I am guessing that seeing Elizabeth die made her think about this very seriously. Possibly, seeing just how old Prince Charles got before becoming King also made her consider if she really wanted to do the same thing to her own child. As surprised as I am at this news, I think it's actually a good thing. I hope she gets to enjoy a nice "retirement" for a long time.

One of the hardest things for people to do is leave. Most stay to long. Athletes and politicians are the worst but it happens in all walks of life.
