Quite the surprise, apparently.

Is a queen size danish bigger than a normal one? Cream cheese danish is best danish.

She is really interesting public figure and has led a very interesting life!

While her abdication is a surprise, its not because of any controversy. She's 83 & stepping aside so her son can assume the crown. Sounds like a class act by someone that legitimately wants the best for her country.
Its a shame the octogenarians in DC won't follow suit. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-67854395 |

Maybe the new king will get started on rebuilding the empire. First stop, those upstart rebels in Iceland must be brought to heel.

DKs probably busy building a mother in law house in his backyard for her and asking her to immigrate here

This is definitely a huge surprise.
Traditionally in Denmark, the monarch serves until they die. That said, I can understand why she is abdicating. She is getting old, has been the monarch for over 50 years, and it's a good time for a transition. |
|
Quoted: Is DK part of the Danish royal family or something? View Quote Not in the slightest. I just have a connection to the family because I served in her personal guard regiment (and as an officer there would occasionally interact with her, at formal dinners, etc.). I also briefly served with both of the Princes - but didn't really know either of them. Frederik was a sergeant in the Royal Guard when I was a recruit, so I occasionally had him as an instructor. When I was in sergeant's school, Joachim was also there, but he was in an earlier cohort, so the only time we met was going drinking together a couple of times (as part of a group). I am 100% confident that none of them would remember m |

Quoted: While her abdication is a surprise, its not because of any controversy. She's 83 & stepping aside so her son can assume the crown. Sounds like a class act by someone that legitimately wants the best for her country. View Quote Exactly. She is just getting old. Not only has she had some health problems recently (including a big back surgery earlier this year), but I am guessing that seeing Elizabeth die made her think about this very seriously. Possibly, seeing just how old Prince Charles got before becoming King also made her consider if she really wanted to do the same thing to her own child. As surprised as I am at this news, I think it's actually a good thing. I hope she gets to enjoy a nice "retirement" for a long time. |
|
She also hates cell phones and refuses to own one. For her annual New Year's speech, she doesn't use a telepromoter or anything, but just reads off her paper notes. |
|
One of the hardest things for people to do is leave. Most stay to long. Athletes and politicians are the worst but it happens in all walks of life.
Hope she enjoys her retirement |

Quoted: DKs probably busy building a mother in law house in his backyard for her and asking her to immigrate here View Quote He is moving to Hawaii so why would he do that. As I recall he still holds citizenship with the motherland so I think the queens last act should be to make him governor of that Island aka Rock he recently told us about. |
|
Quoted: Does she still smoke? View Quote I am honestly not sure. Before her back surgery in February, the surgeons told her to stop smoking for a few weeks before the surgery, and she did. I remember reading a few weeks after the surgery that she was going to try to stick with it, and not start again. But I don't know what she actually ended up doing. Her smoking is an interesting phenomenon in Danish media, because there has generally been a gentleman's agreement among the media that they don't mention her smoking, and they don't publish picture of her smoking. Of course you CAN find the occasional photo if you really want to, but as a general rule, it's something that everyone knows, but nobody really talks about. |

I dunno anything much about her, but I like (and my daughters are very impressed by) that the edition of Lord of the Rings I have uses her illustrations.

Quoted: He needs to get those Swedes in line first. Make Malmo Danish Again! View Quote Let’s start small and build up. Based on the recent GD thread it appears that Iceland is only defended by eight hot blond girl cops, so I think the Danes have a shot at this. I’d like to them row there on a long boat, but it’s ultimately up to the king. |

The Queen seems like she is several magnitudes better than King Chuckles.
