Side opener.  Category 1: Best bang for the buck?  Category 2: Best of the best (quality; cost no object)?

I saw such a thread ........ somewhere, but forgot the results.

Best bang for the buck is the Boker Kihon (I don’t care for their other side openers). Best all round tactical is probably a toss up. There are allot of good, tough knives. I like Heretic, Hogue, and Protech. Gerber is an excellent value and has a long history of hard use.

I vote the Spyderco Autonomy 2, or when I don't feel like carrying a knife, I carry one of my Italian side openers made by AGA Campolin, the Diana. Or one of my AKC Slimline models. Beautiful knives!

I carried one for years but it feels like you're walking around with a brick in your pocket. I started carrying this Gerber whateverthehellitis and I like it a lot better.

Typical Arfcom: Dude asks for side opening, first post is an Ultratech.

For a side opener, I like the SOG Spec Elite.

I always wanted a microtech but never could really justify the money so I got a cobra tech at a local gun store. Yeah I know people motherfuck them as a knock off but it’s a fun little OTF auto knife and is actually really solid for 100+ bucks.

As far as side openers I had one from bench made but I don’t remember the model number. In fact I was looking for it the other day and I have no idea where it is but it was a solid side opener and I think it ran about $200 back in the day if only I can recall the model it is.

Best bang for the buck, Mikov or Hogue A01.
Best overall, pretty much anything from Protech, Microtech LUDT.
I also have some Kershaws and Benchmade, but too lazy to dig them out.
Also, check out some of the Boker and Sig autos. Many are made for them by Hogue and Protech.

even the best OTF auto is just a fun thing to show off with around your buddies.  One grain of sand in that thing and then you're flicking it like a Bic pen thats out of ink.  I swapped mine for a 380 and never looked back. Benchmade SOCP dagger and a mid priced serrated pocket knife with clip is the best for the money.  I think.

Cheap otfs are like that. I've used my microtech daily for a year doing all sorts of stupidity and I have not had one misfire yet.

Have you ever handled one?  The double action OTFs are impossible to AD in your pocket.

Ah, thanks! I'm pretty sure they were ordered by supply in Afghanistan and I couldn't find anything that looked like it through a "gerber auto" image search. It's been a good little knife.

ETA: "Gerber Emerson auto" pulled it right up. Thanks for the help.

I’m less worried about a Microtech OTF opening in my pocket than pretty much every other folding knife in existence. Now a HALO, yeah, not for pocket carry. But a Combat Troodon, Ultratech, etc. would be near impossible to open in a pocket.

I have several AGA Campolins. They are some very fine Italians and beautiful for handcrafted knives. Not for hard use, but great gentleman’s knives.

I have a Kershaw Launch 7 that I've been edc for a few years.
It holds an edge well, has a nice thin blade, works really smooth, fits great in the hand, locks up tight even after a lot of use.

The only thing I don't like is the pocket clip tension, it loosened up right away.
My Delica4 has been edc'ed in the other pocket for about 18 years and the clip is as tight as it was on day one.

I’ve had a bunch of nice switchblades but I love this one so much I bought 5 a few years ago for when they wear out, I still have all 5 and carry one every day. Don’t laugh.

EDIT I didn’t read all replies before I posted but pretty cool I’m not the only Boker AK74 fan! ??
