Ars article left cold: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2025/10/synology-caves-walks-back-some-drive-restrictions-on-upcoming-nas-models/
Synology Release, also cold: https://www.synology.com/en-us/company/news/article/dsm73/Synology®%20Releases%20DiskStation%20Manager%207.3%2C%20Bringing%20Efficient%20Data%20Tiering%2C%20Enhanced%20Security%2C%20and%20AI-Powered%20Collaboration

The important part from Synology:
Synology is currently collaborating closely with third-party drive manufacturers to accelerate the testing and verification of additional storage drives, and will announce more updates as soon as possible. In the meantime, 25 model year DiskStation Plus, Value, and J series running DSM 7.3 will support the installation and storage pool creation of non-validated third-party drives1. This provides users greater flexibility while Synology continues to expand the lineup of officially verified drives that meet long-term reliability standards.

1 Creation of M.2 based storage pool and cache still requires drives on the HCL.

I was under a rock and didn't even realize this was a problem until the Unifi NAS thread.  I'm glad Synology is pulling their head out though.  This was a dumb move to not support drives that are cheap.  I've shucked almost every drive in any NAS I've build.

They're really trying to alieniate their SOHO/small business and non-commercial customers aren't they?

What does this mean?

The upshot is that the validated drive requirements are being removed from 2025 model-year Plus, Value, and J-series NAS devices. (Well, mostly removed the press release indicates that pool and cache creation on M.2 disks "still requires drives on the HCL [hardware compatibility list].")

We asked Synology whether the requirements will also be lifted from previous-generation Synology products and the answer to that question appears to be a "no."[/b]

"This change only affects the '25 series models: DS725+, DS225+, DS425+, DS925+, DS1525+, DS1825+. Models in the xs+ line, like the DS3622xs+, are considered a business/enterprise model and will remain under the current HCL policy for our business lines," Synology explained.

Does that mean that the non-2025 models will be required to have "approved" drives?

Seems odd that it wouldn't be removed when the release note indicate that installing 7.3 will remove the requirement.  I get them forcing business/enterprise to comply, they don't want to deal with support issues and the expectation of really high availability vs a prosumer or home user.

What synology really needs to roll back is their handling of apple picture formats in their photos app.

It used to just work.  Then synology got cheap.  And they offloaded image processing to the client (WTF is even the point of the server then?).  If you have a client that uploads iOS photos, like your wife's iPhone, then you try to view those photos on synology photos on the website, they want you to install some browser pluging that shells out to an exe.  There's no exe for linux.  They destroyed their photo hosting server to save a couple bucks.

Yeah.  It doesn't really bother me but it is annoying when I try to view what I've backed up.  I just leave the app running on my Mac now so I don't have to worry about.

I was looking through the notes on DSM 7.3 and this is the last update for my units.  Both are DSxx18(+) units.  I've been planning to upgrade anyway, but I'm holding out for a DS1625+/DS1626+.
To uphold our commitment to quality, every DSM release undergoes rigorous validation. To ensure optimal stability, the models listed below will not receive this update on your device and will remain on their most suitable version. You can only download the upgrade patch from Synology Download Center because you won't receive notifications for this update on your DSM.

So I have to manually upgrade to 7.3 for both my units it seems.

Unfortunately there really isn't a DIY option that replaces what Synology offers.

People certainly aren't going to do weeks of research and screw around configuring multiple different apps to kind of get close.

My box is locked at 7.1.1, so I guess I'm good to go for now.  I still want to move to Unifi at some point but I just can't justify it when I've got 48T chilling happily on the Synology, and DSM is very mature.

I was going to have work purchase a couple of the business models for our offices until I found out about the HDD restrictions.

We had 12 x 14TB drives already that we wanted to use so they were crossed off of the list and I just built a couple of TrueNAS 2U systems for us instead.

I refuse to buy systems with forced HDD limitations.
