The light cycle 90-degree directional switching is most probably due to the limited computing capability at the time. Rendering curved surfaces requires constant recalculation. The light cycle scenes were relatively fast & busy, which made for a heavier computing task. They were using supercomputers at the time, I recall the devs actually had to work in down jackets while coding them due to the environmental refrigeration requirements for cooling.
