I have the CKRT/RMJ “tactical” tomahawk (Chogan?). I like it a lot.

I have their Rifleman's Hawk, which has a decent hammer head on the back.  It's an extremely useful tool.

My roommate in college gifted me an RMJ Shrike ~2011 or so, it's been a constant companion on hikes, hunts, and for generally knocking around in the woods. I love it, it is incredible for small camp jobs and indispensable in cleaning game.

I don't like the idea of it getting stolen though, so I keep a CRKT spike hawk in my car instead. I reprofiled the beard to more closely match the RMJ, and it's been a wonderful tool as well. Many a fire barrel has been aerated by its spikes, and many a piece of kindling has fallen to its blade to make drunken s'mores on a chilly night in the woods.

After looking at Winklers, I’m just so glad that the two different sized Browning Black Label Shock ‘n Awe hawks I got several years ago was enough to scratch that itch I had.

I can second this. I got one to keep in the car for emergencies. As a tool it's junk. The blade is poorly shaped, grind angle sucks, and the balance is mediocre at best.

The nicest I've personally handled is the one by Hogue, and it has a neat holster thing. For high-dollar ones the RMJ is pretty nice but I'd personally buy a handmade hand axe or hawk from a custom maker.

Ryan Johnson (RMJ) is a master smith and makes traditional and historic repro hawks too. If you think the tactical hawks are pricey..

Tomahawks are quite simple tools, so for the price point, you can get a very functional tool. Designs like Winkler or RMJ and other customs are just that...customs. They're basically functional art. While they are great wall hangers (I've see far more expensive art pieces hanging from walls), I know for a fact that the Sayoc and Shrike have been tested pretty thoroughly as hard-use tools. The problem is that many who don't have an occupation for their use are often not willing to spend $500+on a custom "tool" and then go beat the shit out of it.

Hell, I even deployed with the ATC VTAC and both the full size and S13 Shrike hawks. The only use they saw was demolishing some pallets and chopping up some firewood for a little fire pit some Germans had when I was working with them.  Everything I own has been used to some extent...even if it's expensive art, it's still functional are.

RMJ for modern hawk. McCoun for more traditional hawk. The Winkler’s are also very good!
