I've been drinking El Tesero Blanco for a while. When I started drinking it back pre-Covid it was $45 at the state store. Its up to $60 now. In line with inflation. Buuut, I am finding that it is getting harder to justify it. What I am looking for is something comparable that is less expensive. I only drink tequilla neat, typically only one shot - I only want a little buzz, not get drunk. I don't do mixed drinks (I would if I could find mixers that don't have corn syrup in them, which I am very sensitive to). I also tried their Reposado, which was good, but it gives me more of an "ugh" feeling in the morning, whereas the Blanco doesn't do that. Preferably something available in the PA state stores, though if I had to, I could pick some up in MD when I get down there. Ideas? |

El Tesoro Blanco is a well made, additive-free tequila and one of my favorites. It sounds like you prefer blancos over aged tequilas. Tequila pricing seems to vary quite a bit from state to state, but some options that you may want to look at are as follows: Tapatio Blanco: This is made from the same distillery (NOM) as El Tesoro with a similar taste, but less expensive Any blanco from NOM 1579 (the NOM will be printed on the label): G4, Terralta, Volans, Don Vicente are all brands from NOM1579 and are great blancos Arette Blanco: There are several "grades" of this one with different price points, I think that the base one is decent to sip and great for cocktails. The Artesenal Suave blanco is good, but probably at a similar or higher price point as Tesoro If you like the flavor of Tequila and want a cocktail, try mixing it with soda water and lime, and you can add a slash of ginger beer or triple sec if you want a little bit of sweetness. |

El Tesoro is a highland tequila, so I'd look for other highland tequilas that are traditionally made without additives. Given what's available to you, I'd suggest the following to try: Lower price (around $30): Olmeca Altos Espolon Teremana Higher price (around $50): Lalo Tequila Ocho Mijenta I didn't see anything in the $40 range that was better than the stuff I listed in the $30 range. Out of the ones I listed, the higher priced ones are better than the lower priced ones in my opinion, but the lower priced ones aren't bad especially for the price point. I usually stay away from celebrity Tequilas, but Teremana really isn't bad at the price point. If you are shopping somewhere and see Tapatio Blanco, grab it - It's going to be your closest alternative to El Tesoro with a lower price, both are made at the same distillery. |
