Update 10/10
This was an article in the paper last week about our new project. The author is a former student who worked on the past projects. Kind of cool to see that. DK, Economy....History, what's the difference.    Tower getting some base coat paint. We are planning on adding some gravel type rocks to the base today.   It was more difficult than we thought it would be to get the rear legs off. We had to get pretty western with it.  We are trying some texture things on the arms of the dragon.  Looking pretty cool so far. Might need a bit of rasping, or sanding, and a little coat of orange peel spray. We will see where it goes.  Some rock staining for the landscape tiers.   Viking ships off the coast of Paris.  English abby about ready for texture.  Ghost bow.  WOLVERINES!!!!!!!!! Errrr......VIKINGS!!!!!!!!!     Base coat of brown paint on the skeleton of the ship. Once we have a good coat down, we will start the skinning process.  Team Dragon Eyes..... Hopefully, they don't run out of patience.

Update 10/11
Thatched roofs happening.  Rock mix going on the chapel.  Rock'in Rock team  Dragon skin texture on the bottom of his front legs.  Our Dragon rider getting some muscle.   Ghost bow getting some paint.  More work on the eyes.    She was very excited and happy to get to put the dino together.  It's way bigger than expected.  We are planning on how to modify it a bit and where to hang it.  |

I assembled the dino once. Thought the same thing....it's big! Took it apart and put it back in the box where it's been for at least ten years now. Figured the kids would find a better use for it.

Hilarity has ensued..... We are working on the mast keelson, and where it all goes. For a few minutes we thought we had labeled the bow and stern incorrectly. The stern is narrower than the bow....slightly. We literally moved/switched the ship around and started attaching the keelson, when we realized, no, we did have it right.
 Anther teacher was passing and got involved with our discussion of hull shapes, and the narrow end, either bow or stern. Pretty funny discussion. We had it right all along, just had interpreted the keelson as being the wrong way, it isn't.

Update 10/12
Last day of the week for us. We have tomorrow off. Work on the dragon heads for the ships is going well in the Wood Shop. We now have two designs that will be worked on, one for the ghost ship bow, and one for the full ship.   Work on the mast and mounting system for the pole.    Work on the dragon's back legs has started. We will make sure the signatures are not covered up.  The large scales on the head are about done. We will blend them with the spray foam texture to the lower jaw and legs.  More experiments with the eyes. We added a yellow backing, and black outer edge to one of the eyes to see how it looks. We are working to get two identical pupils to start the end product.  The Pteranodon's current location while we figure out how to modify it into a dragon.  The English monastery's hill top getting some grass. We will add longer clumps into the display, then add some paint to make it not so astroturffish.  This is starting to look like some weird Christmas village on top of our fridge.   |

Unless you add two more legs to your Pteradon, it will be a wyvern and not a dragon.
Dragons have four legs and two wings. Wyvern have two legs and two wings. Wyvern:  Dragon:  I feel like this has been discussed before. |

More Dragon eye photos. Much closer to what we would like to see with a finished results. Students started new pupils again on Thursday to try to get matched sets.   With a little light behind it.  Still waiting for CAD to finish our keel carving drawing.  One of my mural painters up in her perch.  Dragon legs getting more foam to be carved.  We are working on engineering a sturdy mount for our mast.  |

Guns, I am guessing that there may be some students that join the big project for the social aspect, do you get many reluctant artists that blossom out once their creative side gets some nurturing? They go from reluctant rivet makers to heading up some niche scenery that fill out the exhibit space?

Many take "Vocational Art" because they have no self confidence in their ability to do any art. A Fine Arts credit is required to graduate. Many get into the big projects and then eventually want to try an individual project once their confidence improves, and they find they enjoy creating things. Same with taxidermy. Students often don't want anything to do with that type of artwork, but once they see it happening, they decide maybe they want to give it a shot. |

Well, it looks like we will try to make dragon's teeth out of elk sheds. I just put out an email to the district staff, asking for donations of sheds. People don't like to part with them, but we will see. We will cut the points off to use for each tooth. It's going to take at least a handful of sheds.

Update 10/17
Work on the mast mount continued yesterday. We wanted to make it more solid, and not allow the weight of the mast pole and eventual sail to make it lean to one side or another with flex. Students added a couple blocks on the sides to stiffen up the mount, then added shims to adjust the pole stance. It's pretty solid now. No lean.   We also began adding skin at the stern. There were many do overs here, and we are still working to get the back side identical. We will eventually add another layer that will look more like the wooden planks. This is just a base, but we want it to be as neat as possible.  Our zombie vikings are getting a little paint on their faces.  The screaming dragon rider is getting lips and more skin on the face.  The smaller "dragon skeleton" is getting adjusted.  Scars are being added to the meat of the dragon's legs.  The skin on the dragon's head is closer to being done.  We did some fitting yesterday to see how it would look on the display. We wanted to see if we would need to add jowls or not? We think we will be fine without them.  Some fitting was needed to slip over the old skeleton.  Some of the lower jaw needs cut off to fit, as it won't be under the upper jaw.   Close.

Update 10/18
Short day for me today, I've got a dental appointment in the afternoon, so ....substitute time.  Yesterday afternoon, I tried to make sure everyone knew what we needed to do today to make progress. Many students were gone to take the ACT, so I'll have students teaching other students this afternoon. Hopefully they remember everything.We are getting closer to being done with the base coat of brown on both ships' hulls.  Several lessons on skinning yesterday afternoon.  This is one of the hangers for the new ship. My welding student is working on the 2nd.  Woodshop students working on the dragon head for the keel. And, I was just told they are working on trying to make keel carvings for the base of the heads too. Didn't know that.  The base of our castle tier is about ready for vegetation, and stain on the rocks.  Our Viking Great Hall building is turning out nicely.  The Viking village mural progress.  Siege of Paris.  I had to order some carbon blades for cutting ceramic tiles for the jigsaw, but we are laying out how we will begin the tiles on our tower.  The mini dragon skeleton is now glued together with hot glue. We are working on building a tail.  On our dragon's claws, we are sanding them out smooth.  Students are also playing around with color for our dragon. We think this will work for a base coat, but will know more today and tomorrow as we add second and third layers?   Lights for the dragon came in. All 400' of them. They were on sale.(My wife hates it when I use that line)  |
