The Acoustic Guitar (Page 1 of 2)

Probably more songs are written on an acoustic than on anything else. I have always felt that any serious player should have at least one good acoustic guitar in their collection.

Any and all are welcome. I’ll start us off.

My newest one. This is a Martin Special 16. A Guitar Center exclusive. More of a budget friendly but still made in the USA version of a D-28 type guitar. Nothing fancy or spectacular about it except the sound.

This is a 1982 Ovation Custom Legend 1619

This was my very first real guitar. I got it in the early to mid 80’s. It’s a 1957 Harmony Archtone H1214 in ivory.

Attachment Attached File

Ibanez AE245-NT solid mahogany top back and sides. Rosewood fretboard and bridge. I’ve broke the neck on it once already and repaired it and it’s still going strong.

Attachment Attached File

Ibanez Exotic Wood Series EW2012ASENT 12 string. Not a bad guitar for the price.

Nice collection.  Funny thing.  I thought I had all the acoustic guitars I needed and then Tuesday I made a fatal mistake of entering Acoustic Vibes store in Tempe, AZ.  Yikes.  This followed me home for my first purchase in about 5 years.

Here are a few of the others I have.  Sharing is caring.

Nice collection, op!  Congrats on the new Martin.  I was looking at some of their lower priced ones and came close to buying one at Guitar Center in Kansas.  They sounded good.  I ended up getting a low end 114ce Taylor there at GC.

Nice! Post it up! Speaking of Glen Campbell I watched him in a performance on one of the late night shows and he had an Ovation that was as thin as an electric guitar probably. I wonder if they ever released that to the public or just for him? I did a brief search before but never have found one like it.

What a coincidence! I almost bought one of those instead of the Martin! Lol. I think I still might get one too!

Do it!!    I've really liked the sound of it.  I've had a few Ovations over the years too, and kind of miss the all black Ovation Tangent I had.  That had a nice thin electric guitar type of neck was easy to play.

I love the sound of my ovation but it wants to walk off my lap when I’m playing. I need to put some silicone on it or something so it’ll hold still long enough to play a song.

My 1964 Gibson J-45 in cherryburst. A family heirloom passed down to me a couple Xmas ago. Stepdad's father picked it up for him from a garage sale for $50 in the northeast (late 60's?) It is marked as  factory 2nd due to small finishing defect. Sounds like a J-45 should.

When I entered the guitar store last week my intent was to find something that played and sounded like my SCGC version of that J-45.  Slope shoulder, mahogany with spruce.  That Vintage Jumbo SCGC might be the sweetest sounding guitar I ever owned.  But the modern Gibson  J-45 wasn't what I remembered.   I tried just didn't do it for me.  Maybe my ear has changed or maybe the vintage J-45s and SCGC version are better than the current Gibson production.  I'd love to play yours.

My Ovation Tangent was the shallow back design, and it really needed a rubber strip or something on the bottom to keep it on my leg at times.

Yeah, this one of mine is far from a shallow back. It’s like trying to hold a beachball. But man it sounds and plays great otherwise!

Modern ones sound darker. Mine has the Adj Bridge that ceramic and I replaced it with the TUSQ drop in, along with new ebony bridge pins. Took a little edge off the ceramic bridge and plastic pins. It really projects which explains why it was so popular in the days before good acoustic pickups and better microphones.

One thing about acoustics is they open up the more you play them too.

When I was working in a guitar shop we had a guy bring in an early 40s J45 asking if it was worth fixing up for his grandson to learn.  The bridge had come off but it was an easy fix.  We told him to call his insurance agent while we called our luthier.

He ended up buying a new Martin for his grandson and was very appreciative that we didn't lie to him and take the guitar for ourselves.

My 1972 Martin D-28.  I will put this up tonally against any prewar Martin (and I have played several).  This thing is a crazy specimen.  I picked it up around 1998 and I am the second owner.

I really do lament how much prices have come up for guitars since I was young.  There are so many guitars like this out there that real deal players should have but most are sitting on the wall of some wannabe player like an attorney or real estate agent.  Maybe even a pharma rep.

I love playing my acoustic, but don't play well enough to justify spending that kind of money on one.

My $750 Art & Lutherie Americana Bourbon Burst CW Presys II works just fine for me

Well in a forum where it’s common to see tens of thousands of dollars of guns and gear in a single photo I’m sure $1900 for a guitar is just a drop in the bucket comparatively.

A cheap fix would be a piece of rough skateboard tape stuck on the bottom to grip on to your jeans.  I've seen some clear stick on rubber pieces for guitars on Ebay that I think are slightly tacky to grip fabric.

How about a hand made, 1 of a kind?  I have an uncle who builds guitars.  Back around 2005, he was making guitar bodies and necks, selling them as kits that the buyer could finish up and then tell everybody they made their own guitar.  I went up to stay with him for a month and we built this guitar from scratch.  No prebent or pre-cut wood, no CNC machine.

Back is bookmatched, front is bookmatched.  Neck is quarter sawn and glued back together.  Compound radius fretboard to fit my hand and playing style.  Cocobolo pick guard and truss rod cover.  Curly maple block where the strap attaches.  Double layered binding around the body, neck, and headstock.  The sides were bent by soaking the wood in a kiddie swimming pool, then heating up a pipe with a blow torch and bending the boards around them.  Neck inlay holes I cut with a dremel.  My uncle had a set of blueprints off an old taylor guitar.  That is what all the internal bracing is modeled after.  After it was clear coated, I spent hours and hours sitting there wet sanding the entire thing with just a cup of water and a piece of sandpaper.  He had made a ton of kits at that point.  This was the 8th completed one.  So serial number 008.  We printed up a label on grandma's cheap printer.

Well now that looks like it would work just fine. My worry is that it would lose its stickiness. Especially on that textured ovation back but it’d be worth a try.

That’s a good idea as well. One of the reasons I was planning on using silicon is that I can just dab a few dabs down there and they would be cheap, hold well, and not be too unsightly. A tube costs next to nothing and would last forever.

I have an Ibanez dreadnought, solid wood, bone nut/saddle, mahogany. A lot of guitar for the price, but still an import: the finish has hazy, ugly blotches. But it sounds much better than the 600 bucks I paid for it.

What my broke ass really wants is a Taylor but I don't play well enough to justify it. Whenever I play or hear one I'm just smitten though.

What my broke ass really wants is a Taylor but I don't play well enough to justify it. Whenever I play or hear one I'm just smitten though.

Nice! I have an Ibanez acoustic that I posted in the first post and love it. It plays well and sounds amazing.

I really want a K24CE LTD Koa, but it's outside of my reasonable price range.  I got $500 skills.

Yeah I quit worrying about buying based on skill long ago. Never made sense to me. I like nice guitars and they motivate me to play longer and better. Plus it’s my money, screw what anyone else thinks. I play because I enjoy it. I don’t play for any other reason so I prefer to suck at playing on nice gear.

Same.  I am a reasonable player but I have professional star level guitars.  Do not care what anyone else thinks.  I like them and I'm keeping them.

C'mon I know one of you assholes is hoarding a D-28 older than mine.  Let's see those Brazilians.

That’s my favorite acoustic, the D-28’s. I’ll eventually get one but I wanna be super annoyingly picky about it when I do. For now that rosewood Special 16 suits me just fine and will be my travel guitar once I get a nice D-28.

Here's my Martin. It's a Mexican one. Still a Martin, but the emphasis is on the second syllable.
I had gone in to try out a Taylor, and wound up really liking this one.

Here's my Alvarez. Chinese, but still really nice and I don't buy them for investment.
Thing about acoustics and me, is I don't really care for dreadnaught sized. I much prefer concert sized acoustics. I wanted acoustic electrics with a cutaway and felt really good iny hands, and these guys were the winners.
