Soundgarden is the correct answer. Four great records from '89-96. EPIC live performances that will never be topped. Superunknown is a damn masterpiece. Cornell' s genius was revealed during that time frame. And, they went out on top of their game, instead of making five more shitty records. Then Cornell went on to make a genius solo record and then fronted Audioslave that made two kickass records. I'm having a hard time getting to another 90's act that can top Soundgarden. I graduated high school in 1995, so the 90s were definitely the music of my time. That said, I was never particularly impressed by most of it and for the most part consider music of the 1990s to be pretty "meh". That said, it was still far better than anything that has come along since. Though there's no way the music of the 90s can compare favorably to the stuff of the 60s or 70s (and some would say the 80s though I think this one is a wash), it was at least the last decade in music that showcased some real creativity and musical talent in rock music. What has come since has been horrible overall. Looking back at the past 18 years, I wouldn't even need all the fingers on one hand to count what I consider to be really good rock bands, and that's including metal. There were a bunch of good bands in the 90s, even if I didn't care for many of the styles of that era.

Soundgarden
The only tool song I like is The Pot but not done by them. I love Brass Against's cover of it though. |

Nightwish are a symphonic metal band from Kitee, Finland. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. The band soon picked up drummer Jukka Nevalainen, and then bassist Sami Vänskä after the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First (1997). View Quote |

Pshhh. Sure. Right. Ok...
Wrong.... Iron Maiden - The Trooper (Official Video) And before some smart ass points out that The Trooper was from 1983...the band remained awesome through the 90s and today. |

Iron Maiden is a strong band but the juggernaut that is Metallica is bigger.

Couldn't that be said about a lot of alternative/grunge/garage bands in general? A lot of it is just being in the right place at the right time. Plus, singer/songwriters of any major band will always admit their is specific bands/genres that had a major influenced on their sound. The acid rockers of the 70's were directly influenced by the late 50s/60's garage bands. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

The only reason that glorified garage band had any success at all is because younger audiences are totally ignorant that they're a rip-off of 70's acid rockers, and not a particularly good one at that. The acid rockers of the 70's were directly influenced by the late 50s/60's garage bands. Nothing against them lacking the creativity to be unique, but they don't deserve to be included in any list of the best bands of the 1990's. |

I will take Disturbed or Monster Magnet. |

Toad the wet sprocket!!!
It is a shame Alice In Chains and sublime and soundgarden end up the way they did, awesome bands of my teenage years |

The 90's had so many great bands. The music had different sound at the begging, middle and end of the decade. I couldn't pick "the" greatest band if I had to. MTV still played videos and music wasn't widely downloaded yet which made for a very different music scene. Greatest national or local acts? So many great bands to local scenes that are never known nationally. Grunge, like it or not was huge.
National acts who made great music that defined the decade: No Doubt, Beck, Garbage, The Chemical Brothers, Radio Head, Blur, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Rollins Band, Wheezer, Megadeth, NIN, The Cranberries, Prodigy to name a few. @JAFFE @m35ben @TheYellowThing @shortbed @sasquatch76 @Bigtwin @CarbineDad @RV8guy @wtfboombrb @Justabulletaway @2PO Garbage - Special (w/Titles) Here is a spectacular local act that most folks will never know that IMHO really defined great Ska in the 90's: Dave's Big Deluxe - Credenza Style Hi Fi |

Toad the wet sprocket View Quote During the actual 90's I spent years hooked on classic rock. Late in the decade I caught up and enjoyed more modern music. Now I listen to a lot of 90's music. I just wish I hadn't tried to learn more about toad. Following the band members on FB was a mistake. I can't purchase anything from them for fear that my money goes to the Clintons or some gun confiscation scheme. |

Sure, there are probably bands that you like more, and you might even hate them, but without a doubt Nirvana was the biggest band of the 90’s.

Metallica is too great to be constrained by a decade. Greatest of all times!

Admire the Art, not the Artist— most artists are alternatively-thinking, or they wouldn’t be an artist.
The first Pearl Jam album, as well as Soundgarden, STP, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, RAM, aka “Grunge” was a welcome kick in the nuts to spandex covered drag queens with big hair. As a babybooming, filthy Hippie-child, I rejoiced in the 1990s and thought—someone FINALLY listened to Black Sabbath, LED Zep and other “acid rockers” for inspiration and delivered. |

Pearl Jam or bust, but therr was a lot of great music in the 90s.
But if that original picture is Quorn or whatever, no way, they suck. |

AIC or Tool
Don't make me pick one. Both outstanding in the 90's. When Girardo opened the 90's with Rico Suave, I watched the Man in the Box video and realized all was not lost. |

Alice In Chains, Pantera, Stone Temple Pilots, all clock in ahead of Zombie.
All though interesting they never dominated their musical niche. I would place them in the Metal category. Having seen both live, Pantera was far beyond them,,,,,,. |

There were lot outstanding one hit wonders from the 90's Mudhoney, Mother love bone, Pixies, Stone Roses, the Flies, Screaming Trees, Collective Soul, Soul Coughing, Toadies, Veruca Salt, Our lady of peace, Exies, Oleander, Everclear, Bush, SCOTS, Cracker, Butter 08, Sublime and more all from that time have at least one song on the ultimate 90's playlist |
