Went to a small drop this morning.

Picked up a ETL. There were better things available but it's been so long since I have even tasted any I just couldn't pass it up.

There wasn't a huge turn out due to the weather and I got to go back through and get a second bottle. Hope I like the HH.

The Blue note was not part of the drop. Just a great store pick.

Did the HH Distillery tour while in town for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival.  Saw this pallet marked for export...

For example: I usually have a bottle of plain ole Elijah and OGD 114 sitting around. My last bottle of EC is undrinkable. The last 2 OGDs were very very bad. I’ve also had a bad bottle of Buffalo Trace in the past 6ish weeks.

I’ve been a bourbon addict for the last decade. I’ve never noticed this much difference in mid shelf bottles, much less across different companies and in a short period of time.

All bourbon has leveled-down.

Higher demand = younger bottles in batches.

I'd also wager the barrels are being made by younger and younger growth Oak.

Everything that goes into making Bourbon affects the finished product, and everything being used nowadays just isn't as good as it used to be.

Picked up an Angels Envy triple oak and also this one from Sam’s Club. I really like the triple oak. My first time trying a Sam’s club pick.

Has anyone tried any mixes? Like Poor Mans Pappy?
Thoughts on any of them?

I've done the Poor Man's Pappy before.  Very good in my opinion.  Nothing to lose by trying it if you have Weller Antique 107 and Weller 12 on hand.

It's certainly not something I would do often, but it is an interesting way to enjoy the bottles if you have both.  A way of adding a little more proof punch to the W12.

I finally found a bottle of Buffalo Trace today.  First impression is that it's pretty rough, but I had just opened it.  I'll give a few more tries before making a final judgement.

I like it, but definitely wouldn't pay secondary price for it. Problem is more and more liquor stores are charging secondary prices now.

Store in my area that has been reasonable in the past wants $60 per bottle for Buffalo Trace and $300 for EH Taylor small batch. Hell, I'd take $200 for the Taylor I have and get 5 bottles of JD Triple Mash if they're paying that much.

It's crazy how this varies state-to-state.

$60 for BT is absolute insanity.

Even in the worst of the boom here in Texas, EHT SmB was $150, tops.

Maybe some greedy Indian or Arab store owner would have it at $200, but $150 was the going rate.

It's $80 now and the drops at the bigger box stores that don't mark up are becoming a regular thing now.

I just acquired my first W12 and have a bottle of 107 and am having a hard time mixing them. I will probably mix up a small amount to see what happens
I also read to mix it in a bottle and let it rest for 30days before you drink it.

I just grabbed 2 (2 bottle limit in my area of PA at least) for 29$ bottle, on sale from 31$…it’s always that price just sometimes hard to find.

I picked up a bottle of Elijah Craig Toasted today. I’m not a huge fan of EC small batch but I've heard good things about this bottle.

Yep consistently very good.  It used to be limited in OH but recently it's much easier to find on the shelf.

Picked up one each of an Ezra and Rebel stave finish series from our recent state release that are pretty nice, especially the Rebel with toasted oak staves.

Got one of the Wild Turkey 8 year 101 proof released to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Jimmy Russell.  I'm liking it very much.  It's great for a $49.99 MSRP.

everything I have seen indicates that there is essentially no difference.  It's just a marketing thing and the 101 "Private Barrel" is replacing the Kentucky Spirit "Private Barrel".  Honestly doesn't make a lot of sense to me unless it's just a way to inflate the price of a bottle by a few bucks.

If anything I'd guess the Private Barrel is one chosen by the stated party on the label as the barrel they bought for a private bottling, vs. the KS which is just any old barrel they deem up to the labeling.

Just like the difference between EC SB/BP and EC Private Barrel/BP, except that the WT ones are proofed down to 101 instead of barrel proof.

For sure. Texas alcohol laws suck a big one. They've done great on guns and knives recently, but need to get rid of front license plates (not that I have any), and sell booze in Costco.

After a couple of weeks, the Buffalo Trace has really smoothed out and I'm enjoying it.

I follow a Facebook page for whisky enthusiasts in the state and several have posted finds today, including Blantons and E.H. Taylor Small batch.

For those of you in VA.  KO Distilling Bottled in Bond is really freaking good. My usual go to Bourbons are 4 Roses Small batch select, Woodford Double oaked, KO Distilling Bottled in bond.  I've had Michters before but wasn't overly impressed.  Most of the hard to get stuff is way overpriced so I won't even bother with it.
