OP,
What do you want it for? Daily wear in Texas? Street Racing with your Vin Diesel fan club? |
|
A smart, Harvard-educated feller such as you might provide some information to the plebes about what sort of leather he desires. Overcoat type? Flight jacket? Motorcycle jacket? BDSM wear? WTF is your desire?
|
|
Is there a such thing as a leather jacket you can wear in the rain?

In reply to those asking me for more specific details.
1. I was really curious what people would post, so I provided none. 2. Ok, I am actually a pretty serious motorcycle rider. I probably have 10 or more leather jackets. Including some very serious race leathers from top makers. I find myself, casually wearing a top quality Belstaff motorcycle jacket. I also have an old Schott Perfecto that I used to live in when youthful, that I still love. However, everything is either black or power rangerish. So, what I am starting to think about is a brown jacket. I am inclined toward a simple cafe racer style. |

Attached File Dainese came out with a movie/retro line a couple of years ago. They didn't sell well and are on closeout everywhere. The line includes pants, jackets, and boots. I am partial to the Harrison. It has built in soft armor. Attached File The Dainese Bryan has a good armor rating and meets the CE cat II spec. Attached File This Merlin has both built soft armor and a pocket for CE armor on the spine. Attached File The Revit Gibson is similiarly set up and is a traditional cafe cafe racer in tan. The Revit Lane comes with CE I in the shoulders and CE II pocket for the spine. Available in a burgandy, it meets the styling considerations you put forward. The Icon 1000 Retrograde has a D30 armor system including alloy plates. I am not familiar with this rating and can't endorse or condemn it. The unit is on closeout. Attached File |

The Dainese Patina 72 is a lovely jacket. It does have armor but it is EN 1621 standard with a G2 back pocket. Attached File |

Are we talking about a huge bouncer type guy that has a oversized Wilsons leather jacket?

I have a Buell letterman style jacket. It's rare enough that I can't find a pic of it on the Gargler.

Not leather, but a nice alternative. M0851 is a Canadian company that makes jackets out of Italian cotton that is impregnated with resin. At 5' it looks like leather, but up close you see that it's actually this really cool, textured material. "m0851’s Talmigo is our signature all weather fabric, woven with 100% Cotton yards, dyed and finished in Italy. The garment is brushed cotton twill, coated with 3 layers of Polyurethane pigment color resins to create water resistant fabric. It is then dried in a water softener solution to create a softer touch. A performance Teflon coating applied on the lining inside the jackets adds to the technicality, making them dry quicker and extra water repellant." I've had one for about 10 years. The material is waterproof and feels awesome, and I've gotten many compliments on it. https://www.m0851.com/store/m0_usd_en/2776-talmigo-black https://www.m0851.com/store/media/catalog/product/cache/3/thumbnail/2000x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/m/0/m0851-hif-vta2776xx00008_web.jpg |

Schnee's makes some nice leather jackets. I have this one, one of my favorite pieces of outerwear. Unfortunately it doesn't get cold enough here to wear it often.

I love my G-1 jacket. It's an original issued one from 1978.

Yeah, that's all I wear in cool/cold weather other than when doing yard work, etc. I have a 25 yr-old Avirex A2 (commercial, not GI), an Indy jacket and a leather copy of an M65 field jacket. Forgot, I recently picked up a leather copy of a CWU-45P.

Vanson Leathers. Check it out. They make leathers for riders, but do make some models for casual wear, because the shape of the jacket is different when riding than walking around.
Before I got a motorcycle, and after I sold my motorcycle, I always thought they made the coolest leather jackets. Never owned one. I had a Joe Rocket jacket. Much cheaper. |

Years ago, I spent a lot of money on Eastman Leather jackets (made in England). They are pricey but are almost perfect reproductions of US WW2 jackets. The stars of my collection are Eastman versions of a Roughwear Clothing Company A-2 and B-3. These jackets are known as "redskins" to collectors... they are hand dyed like early war jackets (as opposed to vat dyed) resulting in a mottled reddish color. The US agent for Eastman is History Preservation Associates run by a fellow named Charles. Great to deal with.
IF you WERE in the market for a black jacket, I would highly recommend Taylor's Leatherwear of Tullahoma Tennessee. I have a bunch of their jackets (Chicago PD, New Orleans PD, NYPD etc). Although they have gone over to imported products, they are high quality and ruggedly built. Nice people to deal with and their prices are right. I've had to have the sleeves shortened on a couple of my purchases and they get $25 to do that (some of the motorcycle type jackets have sleeves sized to cover your wrists when reaching for handlebars...too long for "general" wear. If you decide to try a Taylor's (I highly recommend the Chicago PD)..put the jacket in your cart and plug in the promo code "COPSDOITINLEATHER"...your welcome! Code works on sale page too. |

The damn thing must have weighed about 30 pounds. The collar had straps to buckle it closed. The coat had some type of grey velvet liner, moleskin? velour? And it had straps on the inside so you could close it around your legs while riding your bike. Never been able to find another one. Can't even find a pic of it via Google! View Quote |

These are great jackets! I have a goatskin A-2 that I bought 15 years ago and wear it daily during colder weather. These are true A-2 replicas. All their stuff is very expensive nowadays, but you get what you pay for. My jacket looks as good after years of wear as it did when I bought it. I would love one of their Bedford car coats in brown horse hide, but I cannot afford a new one (over $1400 currently). I keep hoping to find a gently used one somewhere.
