Shocking Reason US Navy Sailors Pushed Helicopters Overboard

I did not watch the video yet.

Got to meet retired CDR Hugh Doyle (Chief Engineer on USS Kirk) who spoke about that operation.

The whole thing was improvised, quite a testament to the men on those ships.

My buddy told me about pushing a shit ton of stuff overboard when they were on their way home and the ship was being decommissioned and scrapped I think. Saved weight, burnt less fuel I guess. Still seems wasteful though.

Very wasteful.  But also easiest rather than doing papers on hand receipt items: "Lost Overboard/Underway"

Then came DRMO which is now DLA: Defense Logistics Agency

DLA is great for getting excess materials from others to folks who need it but don't have the authorization to possess - at least to try out/train with.

Also useful for getting certain materials into Law Enforcement for their use until its complete ragged out, then it HAS to be turned back in or the agency/dept is on the hook for the new purchase price.

This was how MRAPs got transferred to LE agencies.

I heard that they were license built by Kawasaki and couldn’t be certified for use in the U.S.

I have no idea if that’s accurate.

Edited to add that Fuji Heavy Industries built the UH-1.

There wasn’t room for all of them.

fwiw, they only tossed the SVN helos and plane off the side, not US equipment.

In 2021 America left Afganistan in Operation Twerk Wind. It seems since we don't study history we are doomed to repeat it.
