Trump declares victory in historic deal with Greenland as he secures 'permanent' US military rights The deal bars Russia, China and non-NATO countries from establishing military bases on the island, Fox News Digital learned President Donald Trump struck a sweeping agreement with Denmark and Greenland this week granting the United States permanent military rights on the strategically placed Arctic island. The U.S. will now have permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland, and the ability to establish additional military installations as needed, according to a senior U.S. official who outlined the deal exclusively to Fox News Digital. The deal bars China, Russia and other non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or maintaining troops in Greenland. It also restricts adversaries from investing in sensitive sectors that could pose a threat to U.S. national security. "This historic deal is a huge win for the United States and the American people," Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Fox News Digital. "Thanks to President Trump’s vision and leadership, this historic agreement permanently guarantees U.S. security interests in the Arctic at zero cost to the U.S. taxpayer." So do you think this was basically a case of Trump asking for more than he ever thought he'd end up with, as part of a negotiating tactic? I wonder what he'd have ended up with if he had just asked for permanent military rights in the first place. I'm guessing something less than that |

If it sticks this is pretty good. Does this have options? Like to purchase? And is there money being given? On edit is says no money for additional expansion. But, we will be building infrastructure like networks and roads, plus, they have one of the most powerful nations protecting the ice island. Seems like a win for them. Pretty crucial real estate for middle defense, I’ve read. |

First he asks for something ludacris, then people go crazy and he "walks it back" and gets what he wanted in the first place. It's astonishing how well this works. |

Gun control is not the answer. Gun control is the question. The answer is NO.

And gullible morons eat it up, thinking he accomplished something. Same exact thing he did with Canada, China, Iran, etc. |

Didn’t he also want mineral rights? This is a good deal, but I do have to wonder if we had just approached them with the proposal in the first place, we might have avoided a lot of the BS. |

Same exact thing he did with Canada, China, Iran, etc. He came into office making a big deal about Greenland, Venezuela, and the Panama Canal. We are now buying Venezuelan oil at a discount, Chinese companies are no longer running the Panama Canal, and we have unlimited military access to Greenland. Take away the mis-step in Iran, and I'd say that he has knocked it out of the park. |

AI fact check summary, "Verdict: the headline is real and accurately describes what Trump announced today — but "historic" and "permanent" deserve context. What's confirmed: Fox News published that exact headline about an hour ago, and Reuters independently reports that Trump said Friday the US entered an agreement with Denmark and Greenland giving Washington permanent control over security "and all other needs" in Greenland. Per administration officials speaking to Fox, the deal would let the US build new installations without Danish or Greenlandic approval (consultation only), remain in force even if Greenland becomes independent, and restrict "sensitive investments" (ports, cables, minerals, telecom) to the US and allies. A House resolution honoring the deal was also introduced today. The context the headline skips: The US has held extensive Greenland military rights since the 1951 Defense of Greenland Agreement, which already provided for an American military presence in perpetuity and the right to establish defense areas. Experts have long noted "the door is already wide open." When Trump announced a "framework" back in January, CNN reported no actual document existed yet — it was a verbal understanding. It's not yet clear from public reporting whether a signed document exists now, or whether Denmark and Greenland have independently confirmed these terms. So the genuinely new elements appear to be removing the Danish/Greenlandic veto over new bases, independence-proofing, and the investment restrictions — not the mere fact of a US military presence, which dates to WWII. In short: the announcement happened, the headline quotes it fairly, but "permanent US military rights" is in large part a repackaging and expansion of rights the US has held for 75 years." |

lol All of that could have been had for the asking. Acting like a dick and threatening to take it with force (against a NATO ally) and insisting that the U.S. was going to "own" the island - only to settle for basing right that they U.S. pretty much already had - seems like he damaged the relationship - and US reputation - for little to no benefit. What he did get from playing hardball was that Denmark will now station a few more troops on the island, which they have never bothered to do before, and possibly beef up the Naval presence there as well . But I'm not convinced that an extra handful of boots on the ground, and maybe an extra cutter and occasionally frigate patrol, will by much more than symbolic. ![]() Honestly, I think Trump played this all wrong. What could have worked MUCH better would have been to start secret talks with the Greenland local (autonomous) government, and offered them all kinds of sweet deals, investments, etc. - if they declared independence from Denmark (which Denmark would have granted immediately), and then sign close bilateral agreements with them as soon as they become independent. That could have resulted in stuff like the Vieques or Guantanamo deals - like 100 year leases and complete control, and Greenland would probably have been willing to give the U.S. total control over big pieces of Greenland to build military bases, ports, etc. Plus, they could probably have been convinced - in exchange for investments and welfare - to give the U.S. some exclusive mining rights for all kinds of stuff. Heck, a deal like that could EVENTUALLY result in Greenland becoming a U.S. protectorate, or even fully owned - like Guam - in the long run. U.S. control over Greenland - whether by direct ownership, or by what I described above - would be a MUCH BETTER outcome for everyone involved (including Denmark) instead of this "same old" agreement that gives the U.S. basing and overflight rights that we already had. It's a shame, because it's such a wasted opportunity. I do think there was a way for Greenland to have eventually become part of the U.S. - but it was handled in a really dumb way, IMO. |

After losing so many times maybe we should congratulate them to make them feel good even though there was no win. Kind of like a participation trophy. |
