This is how Trump does it / did it... The Greenland deal is Classic Trump 101: start with the wild ask — “we should own Greenland” — get everybody freaking out, and then negotiate toward what you really want. And what did he want? A bigger, permanent U.S. security footprint in Greenland and a way to keep China and Russia out. You can hate the style, but this is how he deals: start huge, create leverage, then land the part you actually came for.

Why Greenland and Trumps Greenland deal is so important -Arctic sealanes -Golden dome -Critical resources like rare earth minerals ◾️on the map you can see the retreating icecap has opened shippinglanes for periods of the year. Greenland offers a place to monitor and restrict Russian and Chinese naval and submarine movements through the strategic North Atlantic sea corridor (known as the GIUK gap). And it complements Alaska to exert strategic control of the Arctic waters. ◾️The map also shows why Greenland is crucial for Trumps golden dome project, Us missile shield. ▶️Polar Flight Path: Sits directly under the shortest trajectory incoming missiles would take over the North Pole to hit the U.S. ▶️Safe Interception: Allows intercepting missiles in space so toxic debris falls over Arctic ice instead of American cities. ▶️Satellite Tracking Hub: Offers frequent, direct communication with polar-orbiting satellites tracking incoming threats. ▶️Perfect Laser Conditions: Features cold, dry, ultra-clear air that optimizes advanced laser and sensor tracking. ▶️Existing Radar Base: Leverages the Pituffik Space Base to feed early-warning radar data straight into the defense shield. ◾️Greenland holds some of the world's largest untapped reserves of rare earth minerals, including critical metals like lithium, titanium, cobalt, and nickel. These minerals are vital for advanced electronics, electric vehicle batteries, and defense technology. Acquiring influence over these reserves reduces U.S. reliance on China, which currently dominates the global supply chain.

TDS Tards- "We alreay had military bases is Greenland ..." This deal isn't about bases in Greenland. Like Venezuela and the Panama Canal, this is about countering China in the Western Hemisphere. We don't need Venezuelian oil, but China is no longer getting it at below market value. We don't need to own the Panama Canal, but a Chinese company is no longer operating it. We already have military bases in Greenland, but China is now blocked from extracting strategically critical minerals from there. Look at the bigger picture. This deal isn't about what the US can do, it's about being able to dictate what our main adversary can't do. |

What he did get from playing hardball was that Denmark will now station a few more troops on the island, which they have never bothered to do before, and possibly beef up the Naval presence there as well . But I'm not convinced that an extra handful of boots on the ground, and maybe an extra cutter and occasionally frigate patrol, will by much more than symbolic. ![]() Honestly, I think Trump played this all wrong. What could have worked MUCH better would have been to start secret talks with the Greenland local (autonomous) government, and offered them all kinds of sweet deals, investments, etc. - if they declared independence from Denmark (which Denmark would have granted immediately), and then sign close bilateral agreements with them as soon as they become independent. That could have resulted in stuff like the Vieques or Guantanamo deals - like 100 year leases and complete control, and Greenland would probably have been willing to give the U.S. total control over big pieces of Greenland to build military bases, ports, etc. Plus, they could probably have been convinced - in exchange for investments and welfare - to give the U.S. some exclusive mining rights for all kinds of stuff. Heck, a deal like that could EVENTUALLY result in Greenland becoming a U.S. protectorate, or even fully owned - like Guam - in the long run. U.S. control over Greenland - whether by direct ownership, or by what I described above - would be a MUCH BETTER outcome for everyone involved (including Denmark) instead of this "same old" agreement that gives the U.S. basing and overflight rights that we already had. It's a shame, because it's such a wasted opportunity. I do think there was a way for Greenland to have eventually become part of the U.S. - but it was handled in a really dumb way, IMO. Agreed that the blustery BS talk was way more detrimental than any benefits. The exclusion of Chinese mining was the one big perk. Iirc they had contracts but were stalled by Greenlanders green minded government, same as US mining companies efforts of expansion. I’m not so sure the Greenlander’s approval on certain projects were always possible. Granted didn’t we sink a nuke power plant through the ice back in the day? I get the local skepticism. Now if we build them some roads and our military boys can drive to the local towns to soak up the local booze we can aid on the expansion of their genetic pool.

Honestly, Canada is already basically the 51st state and should just make it official instead of wasting time trying to buddy up with the EU. Look at the numbers: 75% of Canadian exports go straight to the U.S., and NORAD already handles continental defense under one roof. Trying to pivot to Europe makes zero sense. You can’t trade the perks of a shared land border for a massive regulatory maze and high shipping costs an entire ocean away.

Just as a headsup, China does business in every allied nation in the world, including heavily in the USA. China anything has their military and other spies all throughout. If they had a mining site and buildings I’m pretty certain they would be spying and doing electronic surveillance of our operations. They do that shit all the time. Mining survey flights or supply flights would wander near bases etc. |

If we got all of this, then props to Trump for getting this done. |

No one ever thought they would see Canada cozy up to the Chinese either...... Yeah, until a certain orange retard forced them to. They were already doing so, importing Chinese cars, Chinese people, and laundering Chinese steel and aluminum as Canadaian made to circumvent US tariffs. Canadian government was always pretty comfortable doing heavy handed shit on their people. Their intelligence and security people were quite heavy handed going back in to WW2, granted they were just a dominion then. Now they’re a mostly independent dominion. |

I don't know the particulars of the deal but if we didn't get mineral rights, the deal goes from fantastic to just good/great. It's still a pretty big win for us, but it isn't some monumental victory unless we are getting something in return for the extra protection we are providing Greenland outside of just beefing up security in our region. That said, there wasn't a ton holding us back from beefing up our military presence in Greenland to start and there was a zero percent chance non-NATO members would be welcomed there even before this agreement. |
|
So the new deal is better than the old deal, including rare mineral rights, the deal stands in perpetually in time regardless of NATO, It allows us to install the needed stuff for the missile system..... go figure, once again N_T's are wrong..at some point you would think they would realize they look even worse than they think Trump looks when they TDS everything he does, and he eventually proves them wrong once again..... |

I think there are 2 strategic issues other than just the radar and missile defense. China wants a stranglehold on rare earth elements. Seems like this will at a minimal prevent them from owning ports in Greenland, and probably prevent them from developing infrastructure there. Not having a port is fairly huge, as we really don't want them to have easy access to bringing in containers of drones that would shut down our defense system overnight. I don't know what no cost to the US means, because any additional defense structure is costly. If we are getting some mineral rights concessions, perhaps Trump is hoping to offset income from them to pay for the infrastructure upgrades - so no cost to the taxpayer. |
