They can only see it as it was, not as it is. When you look into the night sky, you're looking into the past. Always. Whether a few years ago (Proxima Centauri) or billions of years ago (distant galaxies), it's all relative based on distance. Again, astronomers are watching the system, seeing it as it was in the past. Watching the buildup, expecting the supernova. When it happens, and we see it...it happened 10,000 years ago. -Ish. The distance isn't exact, just close. Remember...distance = time in LY. |
