It's really for the company and the brokerages. The company has a list of who was on Record that date, which they will distribute shares to. The brokerage will determine if that person still has the original shares, if they do then they get the split, if not its forwarded to whoever their shares were sold to. It doesn't really effect the retail trader at all. |
