I would like to buy my son his first watch.  Looking for a reliable automatic under $300 but could go a bit more if I need to.  I've not done a lot of reading yet but will take a look at all posts in this forum.

I own a Seiko Diver and an Orient Mako and those have been fine.  Any recommendations are appreciated.

Glycine make a damn nice watch for not a lot more. Check Jomashop and Ashford.

This! I own two and they're very accurate. I'm talking 10 seconds off after 3 months. I paid about $400 for one and $300 for the other ( on sale )

A little more than $300

Their GMT divers are quite nice.

Apparently can’t link to eBay.

Anyway go there and search Glycine, select auto movement in the filter and sort low to high. Several $300ish options.

I was going to recommend Orient.  I also have a diver (Mako or Ray, can't remember right now) and it's been a great watch.  As you probably know, they have a huge catalog with most or many under $500, especially grey market.  I don't think you can go wrong with any of them.

He said he wanted an automatic. You suggest a solar powered Quartz. First post fails. (FWIW, I like Citizen Eco-Drives and think they're great watches, but it's not what the OP asked for.)

FWIW, I would go Orient. The OP says he owns a Mako, so maybe he should gift something he's familiar with and knows first-hand is worthwhile.

Low 20s and like most guys his age, he has been using his phone to find the time but has now expressed a desire for a watch.  I was kind of looking for something like a sport watch but also a bit classic and not so heavy if possible.  Can go $400 if needed.  40-42mm case size, stainless band.

Something like this maybe?

Orient

If you insist on autos, then I’ve got three in your price range.

Seiko 5 sport. Probably the best. Seiko website

Citizen tsuyosa. Decent, but they are kind of Rolex rip-offs at least in appearance. Citizen website

Timex has some autos for your price. Timex website

I would go with the Seiko personally, and look for them on Amazon or jomashop

Ahhhh was asking my 10yr old is getting his first watch this year xmas......

I would go with some thing a tad more sporty than the orient you posted... Maybe a diver.

Got my kid a seiko 5 auto in 36mm

This here. I have both and they are great. Turtle is larger and beefier and I prefer it, but will always keep the citizen too. I found my turtle on eBay from an authorized dealer for around $350. Was a legit dealer because I had to send it in for warranty work after I dropped it

Orient Kanno and a gift certificate to Blue Shark so he can get some nato straps to change up the look as needed.

ETA Kamasu if he needs smaller than 44mm

Timex now has a bunch of autos that are very affordable, and look pretty sharp too.

I can make you a watch with everything you seek.
It will have a Seiko NH35 automatic movement.
Here are a few that I made very similar to your last post.

If your interested, I can post a few more like these.

Spoke with junior and he wanted a simple watch he could wear for slightly more formal stuff and job interviews so for better or worse we ended up with a Seiko Presage.  It is not heavy and does not have a sapphire crystal but it looks nice and should serve him well as his first watch.  He can get more of a "Sport" or dive watch later.

Nice... I really like the blue hands.

I had an acrylic crystal a while back and it never developed any scratches.
