Looked at a dr650, klx300 and an swm300.
After price of the bike and taxes theres an extra $1300-1500 added to the price. I didnt ask what all that extra cost was but fuck! Thats nuts. Theres a delivery charge in the somewhere and tags/license I know, but damn. Seems a bit much but I could be wrong. |

There is usually an assembly charge (lot of bikes are delivered crated as I recall). $1500 seems high though. Was usually $500-$700 but it’s been 8 or 9 years since I’ve bought a bike.

Yes it's normal, no don't pay them all.
There are some that are legit, and some you can negotiate. Free advice: Go in with a 'out the door' goal. Tell them your OTD number and don't move if it's fair. They'll try all kinds of shit. They're much better at it than you. Stick to your guns and be prepared to walk. Kindly. |

New or used?
On a new bike you can go to the manufacturers website and most will list the delivery fee. DR650 = MSRP $7,099 + $460 Destination Charge + $100 Freight Surcharge KLX300 = MSRP $6,199 ($6,399 camo gray) + $450 Destination Charge RS300R = MSRP $7999 - MSRP does not include freight, setup, tax, title, documentation fees The manufacturer sets the delivery fee. That money is going to the manufacturer, not the dealer. Setup is a flat rate set by the manufacturer for jobs. It's what they use to charge for things like warranty work. Title and Documentation fees, they have to pay someone to do that. The KLX 300 comes with a $400 rebate from Kawasaki. $6800 for a DR650 here.
$6500 for a KLX. Contact them for an out-the-door price. From what I've heard they don't add on a bunch of BS. Won't even collect tax if you're out of state, that's up to you to deal with when you register it. |

The set up and prep fees vary widely by dealer. Shop around. I had OTD prices vary by 1,500 on the same bike (KLX 300r) between dealers within driving distance. Get written quote so you know you’re comparing OTD price. I will say, no dealers were interested in negotiating much on their deals. Not like the olden days. |

Yes they do that it’s common practice on new bikes usually it’s a mix of shipping + set up fee etc but it depends on how badly they want to sell it . You could get out the door at MSRP most won’t do that. Toward the end of summer you can find some good deals on used ones.

As others have said, shop around. Some will have higher fees than others. One time I bought 2 KTMs for list plus tax and title, the next closest quote was $1500 higher each due to the fees game. My wife went alone to buy her bike and they stiff dicked her to the tune of 40% over the list cost of the bike and she didn't walk out. She called me and I told her that the price was ridiculous and I would walk out the door. Her bike was on the low end of cost and they tacked on flat BS fees.

I bought a CRF300L during the worst of the scam, most dealers were screwing people like crazy, found a dealer that wasn't laying any crap down, they got my money. |

KTM 690 or Husqvarna 701 or Honda CRF450L |

I just bought a new DR650 last week, emailed all of the dealers around me for their OTD price. The first dealer that got back to me wanted $8700 otd, about $1600 in fees including $600 in document fees. Another dealer quoted me $7400 otd, which is less than Suzuki's posted msrp and fees. Needless to say I went with the second dealer. One other dealer quoted $8000 otd. All that to say - shop around and don't fall for the idea that reasonable deals can't be had.

When I was looking for a new Dr650 in 2021 all the dealers were 8k-ish out the door.
I found an older gentleman that had a used 21 with 700 miles on it for $6520. I bought it in December during a snowstorm. |

Damn. Seems like only a few years ago (but pre-covid) you could find used older dual-sports around here for $1500-2500 all day long. Since the tech/design hadn't changed in 30 years, it was no biggie to get an older one. Shit is so expensive anymore. Have been thinking about adding a used 650L or DR650 to my garage, to supplement my Triumph Tiger 800 XCx ADV. But nah... I'm good.

When I bought my TW200 the MSRP was $4,895.00. I was on a waiting list, so if I didn't get it the next guy on the list would. My OTD price was $6,100.00, that included tax, title, license, freight, setup. I was okay with it.

When I go to Kroger, they charge $6.99 for a frozen pizza.
Then they add on $1.29 for delivery to the store (not my house). And, an addition $.49 for the frozen pizza to be assembled. |

Either buy used or shop around. I've bought three Honda dirt bikes in the last couple years from a dealer in West TN that doesn't play games and gave me less than msrp with zero fees. Totally worth a couple hrs drive!
