My 1984 Chevette.
It was also a Diesel.

I bought it New and kept it until the engine broke.

I just loved its MPG
When the Job Description I had ceased to exist and I had to switch to Deploying.....

It's a rare month that goes by that I don't miss it.

It would be fun to have this car again, especially since it would be an extremely rare car in the US (although I guess that also means that finding parts would be the opposite of fun ).

Ford Capri 2.3S

By today's standards (or even by contemporary US standards), it was a shitty car ... but by Danish 1980s standards it was a pretty cool car (a V6 was rare in Denmark), and I really enjoyed owning it.

My sister had a yellow one , no idea engine. First car I ever drove popped in her 8 track and took off from the high school parking lot.
Don't remember how I got her keys I was 14 or 15 no license

1974 Triumph Spitfire. I loved that car. Mine was beat to Hell but I only paid $600 for it (in 1985). After a cheap paint job and some new tires, it was a pussy magnet. It was totaled by a drunk driver. Ironically, I was on my way to the airport to pick-up a former one night stand who wanted another date. I got banged up pretty good but walked away…without a car or a date

Fuck you if you drive drunk!

My first vehicle was a 1980 toyota pickup.  2 seat, rwd, 4 speed manual, motor was a little NA 4 banger that made about 87 HP, wing windows and roll ups - a true GD dream.   It died of rust which was it's only sin.    Those things were simple and rugged - you couldn't kill the engines.   It actually had A/C and power brakes.

I'd love to have it back just to tinker with.   The engine compartment was spacious compared to today's.

54 Chevy Stepside. Candy apple red with a lot of comfort mods like a/c, tilt column, power steering, and power brakes. Even had the suspension off an Impala so it rode nice.

63 Chevy short bed with a built 327, M-21 four speed, and 4.11 gears. Had it in high school and a lot of rich kids lost cases of beer when I shut down the cars their dads bought them to go to high school. It ran in the high 12’s and pulled the front wheels off the ground in second and third if I got a good hook up off the line

65 Catalina 2+2 ragtop. 421 car with a bunch of rare options like tempmatic a/c, 8 bolts, console, and factory reverb

68 442 Hardtop. 4 speed car with 433 gears and zero options. Manual steering and brakes: rare set up for an Olds. I had a 455 in it and it would break loose at 55 on the highway if you mashed the gas. I probably should have replaced the 14” wheels with something bigger.

69 442 rag top. Got rid of it when I took off to college as I thought I needed something more reliable.

69 W-34 Toronado. Only one I’ve ever seen with the W option

71 Buick GS. This one is in a friend’s possession so I’m OK with it ass well

71 GTX. 440 with the air grabber hood and short pistol grip shifter. Also In a friend’s possession and he cherishes it so I’m good with that

73 GS Riviera. Black with red interior.

Still have my 70 GTO.

Classic Cars are kind of like guns to me in terms of getting rid of them. I always miss them.

'98 Chevy Silverado Z71. 5.7l TBI with 285k and everything still worked, but had a rod knock

Tripled my money when I sold it, but I should have just rebuilt the engine and kept it as my F350 went down a few months later and it took several months before I got it fixed

1988 Lincoln Town Car, burgundy red all around.

Pic not mine but is exactly what mine was. Same color, same trim, same wheels.

Really don't even know what the hell made me sell it. Something about wanting to keep it pristine and original if I had kept it and replacement parts not getting any easier to find for a nearly 40 year old car if you happen to need them. I dunno, some dumbass reason like that.

Been kind of looking to get another one. Maybe burgundy again if I can find it. Or maybe dark blue. Or black. Gotta be something dark though.

Nice thing is most of the ones still around for sale are ones that someone bothered to take care of and preserve. Yet they never really reached collectible status so prices are still pretty reasonable. And being a Lincoln, they weren't typically getting chopped up with mods or hooned around by kids.
Keeping the tank full on that barge is a bit of a hard pill to swallow, but it ain't terrible I suppose.

Late 70's-80's Brougham is the pinnacle of car styling. Perhaps not build quality or performance but certainly styling. This is one fad I hope makes a comeback with all the other 80's stuff suddenly becoming popular again.

I would be happy if I could drive early 2000s Buick LeSabres for the rest of my life.

I would love to have my old '68 Cougar back.

Also my 2000 GMC Sonoma.  That truck was a workhorse that served us well.

But the one I wish I had back the most is my old 1999 Astro Van with AWD.  Perfect vehicle for a family, and then take the seats out and you have a cargo/work van.

In addition to the ones I mentioned, dad would buy used cars for us to drive and then they would be handed down.

Some other ones that we had and I drove:

1971 Datsun 240Z, 4 speed, no AC, no PS and I dont think it had PB...

1970 Fiat 850 Sport Coupe

And what we called the barge, a 1972 or 73 Buick Electra 225.  That think had a 7' back seat

This one, a 1978 CJ5, it came with a 6 , in cyl about three months it had a 360 4 bbl out of a Ambassador police car that got rear ended and totaled.   Lifted two inches, headers, three speed manual, full roll cage.  One of the two fastest Jeeps in Delaware at the time.  Raced it from '78-'82.

That thing had so much power if I dumped the clutch it would spin an axle in the hub.  AMC used a spline axle and hub with a nut holding the hub on. I had witness marks on axle and hub so I knew which one spun.  Always carries a left and right axles with hubs mounted and tools to change out axle, and I did a few times.

DK: I assume you know they were sold in the States in the 70's?  Had a friend who had one at that time.  Got stolen in New Rochelle NY, soon after he bought it. . . Rented one in the UK when my wife and I visited there in '82.

Now to the OP's question---I got married in '77, and just before I did I bought a '74 Opel Manta in lime green. . . .loved that car!
Like this, but in green:

I used to lust after the Spitfires, MG's, Sunbeam's, etc that some of the younger teachers drove to school when I was in HS (early 70's).   Only learned years later how they were all POS as far as reliabilty, etc.---for me at that time is all about European sports cars. . USA Muscle cars were still being produced, so they were not affordable. . .but you could find older European cars for around $1-2k. . . Of course everyone who didn't have much $$ ended up with VW Beetles.   They did everything poorly---except run.  Ultra reliable and easy to work on.  Every town had a "VW Specialist" who could pull the motor out of them in 30 minutes. . .

Had a '71 AMC Javelin SST w/ a warmed up 360ci with 3" exh coming out before the rear tire. The previous owner bubby-AMX'd it. No back seat, G60 series tires up front, L60's in the back. Drove it from VT to Ft. Polk, La and averaged 6.5mpg. Lost a starter somewhere south of Knoxville, drove the rest of the way by pushing or hill starts. Was an absolute blast of a car. Wish I never gave it away.

Second would be this tank:

Not mine but the family car when I was a kid was a 1986 Toyota Land Cruiser all manual 4x4 and my Dad's truck was a 1988 Ford F250 short cab with short bed all manual 4x4 diesel. In my late 30s now and I would give almost anything to have either of those vehicles, and not just for nostalgia's sake. Little to no electronics, simple to work on, and reliable. This idea that modern cars are more reliable is BS, both of those vehicles never had a breakdown, had over 300k on them by the time they were sold, and I don't recall either of them ever having any problem that was so major it couldn't be fixed at home. Modern vehicles are not worth what they cost and nobody is making a vehicle right now that I would feel good about spending my money on.

I miss my old TJ. It was dead nuts reliable, manual everything before the JK went wild with electronics, nothing fancy not even ABS.

Bought it with 30k on the clock when I got my first decent paying job. Daily drove for 10 years and put on 140k miles. With a small 2" lift and sway bar discos it would go anywhere I needed it to.

Traded it in to buy a Frontier. Should have kept it. TJ prices are now insane. Oh well.

My '76 CJ5 used to do the same thing, even with the stock 232. I finally ran all the junk yards out of self-splining hubs so I finally just drilled the last one thru and put a grade 8 bolt thru it. Looked properly Frankenstein'd, but it held just fine.
