Oh, and pogey bait was the shit the AAFES tent had for sale before they got cleaned out by the first three dudes in line. It was the lickey-chewies, sodas, crackers, cans of tuna, packs of Ramen, and other edibles you brought to the field if you were lucky enough to have a vehicle or if you were willing to hump it in your already overweight ruck. Back in the days of WW2, it was the Hershey bars and cans of Coke the REMF supply guys absconded with to enjoy themselves or to sell on the black market, rather than forward them to the guys on the front line. I could not have said it better myself. It was always fun heading out of the motor pool gate at Mainz with pogey bait hidden everywhere in the tank. The MPs would search sometimes and never looked in hull ammo storage or up the gun tube. No one realizes how much stuff can be hidden there, and if one ever asked, the breech block wrench would never be found... |

Not sure I’d want to hump a tube filled with beer cans though. They were more noted for having a coffee pot once set up. |

Part of the Brigade Packing List was an M72 LAW tube or AT4, 20 sandbags tucked under the ALICE Ruck flap. 12oz Coke cans would fit in the 66mm M72 LAW Tubes, would stay cool for an hour or so inside the fiberglass and aluminum collapsed tube. |

I have never ever been tasked with looking for pogey bait as an official task. Drugs yes, alcohol yes but never on a tactical vehicle heading to the field. That was frowned upon even in the guard. I missed that era of alcohol in the field by a couple years. Closest was beer at night on advance party that set up the tents and assisting the cooks setting up their field kitchen. No comment on 55 year old cooks having beer through their whole summer camp for after their work was done. Wink and a nod and the admonition to keep it on the very down low. We would have to guard our pogey bait in the field at Drum. The damned bold coons would drop right in the hatches looking for food, food trash and even MREs. Time to use blanks and sp4 ingenuity. I like the freckle faces. Really don’t mind a husky voice, always had a thing for Lauren Bacall. Trash talk can certainly turn me off. Unfortunately very often talking like trash is often a learned military habit. Like locker room talk that rarely gets shut off. |
