In 1911 a revolution ended the Qing Empire, and then the Republic of China was created in 1912. Both the KMT and the CCP fought each other for control of the Republic of China from the War Lord period through WWII. This is the Civil War period. The Republic of China assumed control of Formosa from the Japanese via the Americans in 1947, circa 1947 as the Republic of China (run by the KMT) was in control of the governent at the time. In 1949, the Civil War ended with the Republic of China government vacating China proper and taking over coastal islands from Hainan to Formosa, now called Taiwan. The Chinese Communist Party created the People's Republic of China, and this entity (PRC) is laying claim to the Island of Formosa saying that it is part of "China." "China" is a mythical place right up there with the pan-Germanic notions of the National Socialist German Workers Party, the pan-turkism of the Ottoman empire, the pan-slavism of the Balkans, and I know I'm forgetting someone!! Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation!!! Just remembered!! In any event, the claim is a political notion in that neither the CCP nor the PRC has ever governed Taiwan. They could make the same spurious claims against the Korean Peninsula and Vietnam. |
