At the time (important distinction) I had a few:

Prince of Darkness (yeah, Satan scares me)
Alien
Halloween

I remember as a kid being scared of Nightmare on Elm Street. Watching it now it seems like a comedy. The ones above all hold up well.

Probably the first time I saw Hellraiser.

I also saw the Exorcist younger than I should have. But that was more disturbing than scary.

The 1980s movie the Changling scared me . The wheelchair down the stairs for some reason did it. I dont even remember anything more. That movie just freaked me out.

In a darkened theatre, at age 17, "The Exorcist." Nothing comparable had been produced up to that time, and it was a jarring experience for a young person viewing on a huge screen with volume turned up to the max. If the stairway "spider walk" had been included in the original version, it would have been beyond epic. Hearing the opening strains of "Tubular Bells" still stirs up memories from 1973.

"Alien" was great a few years later.

Since then? Not sure. "Event Horizon" and "The Descent" are a bit disturbing, but I don't know if scary is a good word to describe them.

For me, The Omen. It creeps me out today as a adult. Also, The Ring.

As a kid, the Trilogy of Terror episode with the Zuni doll was absolutely terrifying.

Hellraiser was scary to me as a 14 year old.

The Hitcher was pretty bad too.

I didn't see Amityville or Exorcist until I was an adult but those both kept me awake more than a movie should.

The opening scenes of Saving Private Ryan have been nightmare fuel for me for more than a decade.

Jaws is my favorite movie of all time.

Now days I won't watch any movies with exorcism or incantations in my house. Afraid they might kickstart something I like to think doesn't exist, but being raised Catholic it's hard to not believe dark forces aren't a possibility.

The only "gut wrenching" or "disturbing" thing to me was Omaha beach in SPR. It made me sick the first time I saw it. Horror movies don't creep me out to the point of nightmares.

But jump scares can jump the fuck off! I hate jump scares.
ETA: The omen remake made me jump several times, as did the descent.

The Omen for me. Like others, being religious stuff like that gets to me.

The Exorcist for the same reason. I went to college in DC and went to see those stairs on the side of the building in the dark. Fuck that too.

The Ring. The first time that thing crawled out of her TV set, I almost shot mine.

Jaws scared me more than any other movie I can remember,fucked me up good as a kid and I still love the movie today

Yup, this one was the scariest for me when I was young too. Two days after going to the theatre in Baton Rouge and watching this movie, I was deer hunting in St Francisville near Angola. The club put you out at your stand about an hour before daylight even started. It was one of those foggy Louisiana mornings close to the Mississippi river. if you've ever been in that part of the country, you know what dense fog is.

I was sitting on the ground at the base of a big tree and the morning light was just starting to show. I could see about 15-20 yards maybe. Right about then a huge black Brahman bull came walking up to me from the mist. He was about three feet away when he realized what I was and hauled ass away from me. I was shaking like a dog shitting barbed wire and was this close >< to blasting him.

Scary.

The first time I watched this I went into it thinking it would be another cheesy horror movie. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. Part 2 was just as good.

ETA: I almost couldn't finish watching the Green Inferno. Was pretty over the top on gore.

Lotsa good ones already mentioned but for me it was The exorcism of Emily Rose cuz that shit was real. Paranormal activity got me bad. The very last scene... not much sound sleeping that night.

The Descent and the Ring were both films that really messed me up.

The Last Exorcism seemed scary but it could've been that I was half asleep through it.
