When I was in college I had the opportunity to see a 1st generation print of Red River on the big screen.
The cinematography was simply breathtaking. |

Hmmm... no Errol Flynn yet?
They died with their boots on The Sea Hawk (which was a propaganda movie) Captain Blood I guess it depends how you define "best". |

Steven Soderbergh recut Raiders of the Lost Ark in black and white.
It really shows off how good the cinematography is. His cut and rationale here I saw a version of Caddyshack that was B&W and it was actually really good as well. I was impressed with how it was shot--when it seems unremarkable watching the original cut. |

My parents bought a 19" b&w portable and threw it up upstairs when we were kids and we watched everything b&w when mom & dad were watching stuff downstairs. Later when I was a young adult in a apt my grandma gave me another b&w portable TV with rabbit ears so I can watch the Bills games. Again, I watched everything in b&w back then. I have no b&w movie favorite as I always have preferred color.

Also going to add Rear Window before they added color. A Christmas Carol with Allister Simms.

I'm not reading all of these garbage takes. The answer is 8-1/2

Gonna have to add to the Casablanca dogpile. Not just the best B&W film, but one of the best films ever. The fact it was filmed during the war, and before Operation Torch, makes it so much more poignant. But it's just a perfect movie, regardless.

Kiss Me Deadly (1955)
One of the last of the film noir era and for me the best. A nightmare journey with a little sci-fi and cold war paranoia added in. |

Some artsy bullshit indie film done by some college chicks I used to know.
The girls were hot, naked, and doing weird exhibitionist shit and calling it “art.” |
