The Best Years of Our Lives is number one (and won the Oscar in 1946)
All of the Thin Man's (Men? Mans? Mens?) or pretty much anything with William Powell. Anything with Ginger Rogers (I hear that she danced in a few with some guy). Almost anything with John Wayne (Tall in the Saddle is a throwaway favorite - quickly made on a tight budget) Longest Day and Sgt York for war movies. The Big Sleep (just for the bookstore scene with Dorothy Malone...) |

BTW, if you have some time, research some of things that actresses had to do back in the day to get parts (and a few actors). The casting couch was not just real but worn out. Even some of the biggest stars.
Besides that, the bed hopping, wife stealing, husband stealing, hiding illegitimate children, I guess just human nature when pretty people with money are thrown together. It was an interesting time. |

Mifune must have thought Kurosawa was trying to kill him. The end duel in Sanjuro is fantastic! And doesn't take much of your time to see. Great choices you've listed. Thing is, and it almost makes me want to change my choice, the amazing part about Rashomon has nothing to do with b&w vs color, but rather the conceptual change of objective vs subjective truths. (Which, for a college kid who was a die-hard STEM guy who sucked at math, was a really difficult concept to wrap my brain around.) Something like The Thin Man, or Casablanca, where the b&w is essential to the telling, is probably "better" on a Platonically Ideal scale. |

Recently, Der Hauptmann (The Captain).. VERY good watch if you can find it, supposedly based on a true story that doesn't seem too far off from the film. Highly recommend.
