if you had to pick an obtainable mil surplus vehicle for a SHTF or natural disaster vehicle what would you choose? Has to be something capable of fording water and preferable small enough to navigate through town.

None of them. They seem to be giant pieces of shit that require a huge logistics train to keep operating.
I'd probably just get domestic pick up with decent ground clearance and 4x4 and call it a day. At least then if it broke I could find parts for it. |

I thought we already decided that a white service pickup was best.

If it's like my first car, The Ayatollah Corolla, there is a Buckwheat poster glued to the headliner. |

SUSV(or bv206 as it’s called in the rest of the world). Goes literally anywhere and can float.
Army is currently selling off theirs but they are going for way too much. (Saw one go for $15,000 and it didn’t have an engine or transmission). Attached File Attached File |

I wouldn't want any of them, but if I had to choose I'd opt for an old Chevy CUCV (K5 variant I think?) with a Detroit Diesel.
Back when my Dad was a Police Chief he got a couple of surplus CUCVs for the department. The damn thins refused to die and were easy to wrench on. The only bugaboo about them was the 24v electrical system. I believe it had to be changed for the strobes, radios etc. |

You will be the perfect target in any type of military vehicle in SHTF.

Whatever can get me as close to West By Hod Virginia as possible. Once I do the mating call of my people, they will guide me.

You know the old Blazers? Yeah one of those. But I'd rip out the diesel and stick a LS and automatic in it, but rip off the fuel injection and go with a carburetor and sealed snorkel intake.

If it MUST be a military vehicle, the CUCV (M1008\1009] or its most current iteration. One of the CUCV’s strengths is the 6.2l diesel, believe it or not. It’s mechanically-injected so there are no computers or sensors to complicate things, it’ll run on kerosene, jet-A (in cooler weather), home heating oil, and dirtier fuel than any modern HEUI or common rail diesel can tolerate. Everything on it can be replaced with parts from a K5 or K30/3500. But you’ll pay a lot more for it than an almost identical civilian model.

For any realistic version of "SHTF", I think milsurp is a bad idea. If the nature of shit hitting the fan is such that hunkering down at home isn't a viable option, a military-looking vehicle would draw attention, which is bad.
To my mind, "natural disaster bug out" means being able to drive around the traffic jams on the highways full of people leaving before the hurricane hits. Get some kind of SUV, with a fording kit if you find that to be important where you live, and in a color that doesn't clearly distinguish it from any other soccer-mom-mobile. |

Just get a white full sized van. Paint “Coroner” on both sides and the back. You won’t be bothered

Most drivetrain stuff is still off the shelf GMC too. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:
