He was a PhD engineer and internationally known in the clock world. Died of congestive heart failure @92.

He helped develop these and did the tooling for them (the first ones were made in his machine shop in our basement when I was growing up). Many will know what it is as it is a very famous gun. Currently in the Novak collection.

He designed and made this from scratch (all but the dial).

He was an inspiration and mentor to many and great dad, and is very much missed.

Don’t get me wrong, a 40mm vintage or vintage homage diver is a slim, fantastic watch. It ran 3.5 seconds fast a day over the past 11 days.

I recently became interested in the best bang for the buck COSC Swiss diver.

Choices were limited.

It’s going to be around 1200 minimum for one on a bracelet in SS.
I have a lot of SS divers on bracelet and fewer in black.
I decided on either a MIDO or one other brand. But it had a second crown. I hate second crowns or protruding helium valves. With few exceptions deciding on the internal bezel the crown is for.

Lowest street price on the current 600m MIDO in SS is about 1200. In black it is 1400.

This is the newest version with round indices, slightly cleaner dial, and triangle 12 indice. Skeleton hands and lollipop seconds hand.

It came out six years ago or so on rubber with rectangle indices and an arrow seconds hand. But in black it was only on rubber.

But…
There are still NOS versions of the previous version. And you can find them under 750 delivered. But on a rubber strap.
I almost got the new version but the lume is very green. I’m a fan of white lume. Sure, glowing green is fine. A vintage watch aging lume into brown or yellow is fine. But I don’t like false aged yellow, brown, etc. Lume, and don’t like lume that is not white when it is not glowing. Maybe I’ll find a black bracelet.

So, a double AR spahhipre crystal diver Swiss chronometer for under 750 on a strap. Which a helium escape valve, etc. it’s not a true ISO diver, as it has 60 and not 120 clicks on the bezel. We’ll see how it does.
40 years ago the best bang for the buck diver was a 130 dollar Seiko 6309. About 400 in today’s dollars.
30 years ago it was a 150 dollar Seiko 7002. About 350 in today’s dollars.
20 years ago it was a 200 dollar Seiko SKX007 or SKX 173.
Again, about 350 in today’s dollars.

Now…
Seiko has kind of upped their price points.
Still great divers.
But Swiss options have really rebounded.

Spending like 735 bucks with tax, delivered, NIB, a warranty, fancy packaging, etc. for a Swiss COSC diver is amazing.
Even if just on a strap. It’s also a style all its own. I have once of their vintage homage models as well. Legit company with serious history.
