The wife and I haven't eaten at Denny's in over a decade.
For some reason we decided to stop and have dinner at one last night.
Newer Denny's, very clean with good service.
However, my club sandwich cost $16.00!
My wife's Grand Slam was $13!.
The place was mostly empty even though it was part of a hugely popular outdoor mall.
How do families afford to eat out anymore?

The same time everything else got expensive.
Oddly enough the restaraunts that were more expensive before the scamdemic have increased their prices less than the fast food joints.
Used to we would take the kids to the Japanese place as a treat maybe a couple times a year on their birthdays and maybe once or twice for a date night for just the wife and I. Now it’s barely more to take the kids there than it is to go grab something fast food.

I don't typically eat out but got Hardee's yesterday. Two bun less sandwiches and two drinks $24 bucks I don't see how working people eating out everyday make it.

I don't really find myself questioning the how as much as I do the why.

Fast food that is reasonably cheap has a place when one is traveling or busy.  But to go out to dinner at a restaurant that charges $15-20 per person, give or take, seems odd to me.  For a family of four, it would cost $60-100.  For half that amount or perhaps less, that same family could have a very nice meal at home.

Asked and answered?

Remember when the Six Dollar Burger was introduced? (2001)...

Find a headliner burger for 6 bucks now.

ETA - Sit down places just don't have the quality of food nor service to even justify paying what they ask, in my opinion. Heh, no smoking section nor glasses of iced water on the table.

Everything is expensive now.

From 2008 to now ('23) the cheap working man's lunch around me went from 5-8$ to 12-16$.

Real inflation is in excess of stated inflation numbers by multiples.

Not true.

Two of the $4 "bags" (burger, nuggets, small fries and drink) and you're just under $10 after tax for two people.

Honestly I don't know how they're still doing it with everybody's prices. Its the best FF deal out there.

The closest Dennys to where we live just shut down after being open for over 40 years .     Hit Red Lobster last night ,   that place should be on a death watch  ,   they can't decrease the portion sizes and they can't increase prices ,  it isn't worth the money and they have no where to go .

Raising Cane's has seen huge price jumps in the past few years. The box combo is now almost $12. The Cainiac is nearing $17.

Before Covid we went there every morning with a coffee group.
We got there at 5-530 and went to work about 615

Once in a while we would have breakfast.

It was cheap

After they started opening up before 7 again we went back and damn they went  up in price.

Laziness. Yet another example of why poorer folks are fatter.

I was talking to a bleeding heart liberal millennial coworker about how much cheaper it is to buy fresh groceries and cook, vs eating garbage all the time.

She kept trying to make every excuse under the sun, for the poor, poor folks. "Well, what about single mothers who work? They don't necessarily have the time/energy to cook, after getting off work" etc.

I told her that there are LOTS of things that don't take much time to cook. She just continued trying to think up more excuses for people's choices/behavior.

Oh, and I miss the 90s, when they had a 10oz(?) prime rib for $7.99 for a while. Not a sandwich or salad, but an honest to goodness prime rib (like the places in Vegas used to offer), cooked to your preference.

Went there every Friday for a while. We always tipped our regular waitress well (so every once in a while, she'd have the cook stack 2 of those prime ribs on top of each other, for me). ***miss ya, Sherry

Roommate was considering ordering a Belgian waffle for dessert one time, and asked Sherry, "How much ice cream does it come with?". She says, "As much as I wanna give ya, hun". He orders it, and our first question when she walks away, was, "Uhhh... is there actually a waffle under all that?".  She'd completely smothered the waffle in ice cream.

I found that each individual's own personal experience
of getting the government they deserve
is different and is determined by how they live.

Personally I have no inflation complaints,
because I work in my own independent business,
and simply raise my rates just like every other business.

The size of the fingers had gotten pretty small for a while. That seems to have been addressed somewhat, at least in my AO. But yeah, it was bad for a bit. What's weird is that the high prices aren't really having a impact on traffic. McDonald's is terrible here, yet the drive-thru lines wrap around the building from the time they open to the time they close. It's truly bizarre. At least at Cane's, you're going to get hot, fresh food. Try getting that at a Mickey-Dees.

I think Arby’s has something similar, yep get the value meal, order 2 if your hungry vs the $13 sandwich combo.

My worst memory of a Denny’s was the one by LAX.  The waiter was fruitier than the strawberries on my pancakes.   The plate got dropped off with a big thumb indentation on the top pancake from him carrying the plate.  I had to catch my flight so I just ate around the thumb print, paid up and left.  By the time I landed in Las Vegas I was violently ill and spent two days laying in bed alternating between shivering and burning up with lots of puking and violent shitting in between.
