Not aware of a separate test. My understanding is that they will take random positive samples and subtype them...I don't know if they actually tell you if they do it to your sample though

You don't determine which variant.
A few quality control samples from positive PCR tests are sent to state-approved labs for variant typing. Probably 1:1000 tests are actually analyzed (I don't know the number, but labs have fixed/limited capacity and can't test 'em all). So your friend was lying in all likelihood. Just imagine if we got all concerned about each strain of the cold. or flu. also, IBTM |

When you get a rapid test or a PCR test they give you a negative or positive result. They send your sample to a lab to have it further tested for variants.
So you will never know. |

No standard test given can determine the strain. That takes an additional test that they normally don’t do because of cost and complexity. It doesn’t change the treatment or lack there of so why care?

I don't understand the point in testing for most cases. Except for those who can get monoclonal, nobody else with milder cases gets any specialized treatment anyway. They'll just tell you to isolate and treat yourself for the symptoms, as you would with any typical ILI. Which you can do on your own without going through the extra hassle of getting tested. Not to mention that going out to get tested means you potentially expose more people anyway.

They can't tell which variant it is. If the omnicron is what's going around then that's what you have. He was negative by the way. Had a slight cough for 2 days, but not dry. Popped a 103 fever in the middle of the night. Gave him Tylenol, fever went down to 99, 100. Tested next morning. He was 99 all day. All gone now. Weird. |
