When you dedicate all of your energies into 1 thing, it’s not impossible.

Ancient cultures used hand tools to survive. It was their art, their soul, livelihood and their culture.

We can go to the moon.

Their stonework was their Moon landing.

Edit- You also don’t see all of the mistake blocks that didn’t fit.

Maybe they were just very large rocks that they chopped up into shapes and then just stacked them up. Now people think its some amazing feat to get them to fit together so perfectly.

Every time I cut rocks the pieces always fit back together ever so snug. Its the kookiest thing

It is impressive work, without a doubt. Some of the most impressive ancient work in the world.

I do not find it any more difficult to believe than similar work in Egypt, China, or wherever. Ancient people were just as smart as modern people. They didn't have the same technology, obviously, but the raw brain power of humans has not changed dramatically for thousands of years.

Electric powered diamond saw or a water jet cutter maybe not too hard.

But

Of course it would be very difficult doing it even with a metal hammer and a hardened  metal chisel.

Imagine doing it by pounding on it with another rock or 87.

You have no idea what you are talking about.  They have tons of diamonds in south America, put one on the end of a stick and you can drill through rock. Hit a rock with a harder rock and you can easily shape the softer stone.

I still use a hammer and chisel ( not hardened) to do a lot of stone shaping.

Rocks break fairly easy and in very straight lines if you do it correctly.

Yea Machu Picchu is impressive - it's remote, the construction was epic but you had what, a thousand people living there off and on But the Tiwanaku stuff is amazing for the scale and setting.

There were upwards of 250k in the Titicaca Basin - some estimates as high as 500k. Obviously the ag and infrastructure was sufficient to support and produce surplus for a society dedicated to building ritual sites.

What is a miracle is anyone wants to be at 12,500 permanently. I've been over high passes (I thought I had altitude down. Being on the altiplano wears you. I get people are acclimated - but holy shit why go in the first place.

They were also highly advanced in agriculture producing 3000 different potatoes

Other than that they were backwards in many other ways, like not having a written language

Having been stone mason for a number of years, I do know a little something about stone work.

There are not to many rocks harder than granite that could be used to "beat" a granite bolder into shape.

I am just pointing out that to make something like the below stone using just stone tools is nothing short of miraculous.

Then you should know that granite has wildly varying degrees of hardness, due to the feldspar vs quartz %. There's granite that you can dig through with your fingernails FFS.

If you think those people sanded rocks until they fit together instead of cutting rocks then putting them back together you may also believe people cut funny shapes into cardboard then sand other pieces of cardboard until they fit perfectly...eventually they end up with the whole 1000 piece puzzle.

Cutting stone is very easy. Lifting huge stones can be done with lever action by a single individual.

How would you know what they had? South America has lots of diamonds and also lots of iron. Any metal tools they would have had would certainly have long been degraded back to elemental form. Hell, leave some metal nails out in the dirt for a year and its hardly recognizable. Imagine 1000's of years.

The stone at PumaPunku is Andesite (which I was told was relatively hard, but not extremely so) and sandstone - not so much. Most of the detailed "windows" and "monuments"  are in the Andesite - but nowhere I've seen any explanation how it was done. I always assumed some kind of abrasion, kinda like the way Egyptians made holes.

There were a lot of pounding stone found in the Andesite quarries, but always wondered how the details and cutting through was accomplished. I'm sure there masonry trucks, but I have no idea what they are. What are your thoughts?

Making a "through" hole is much easier than making a square sided  with a  bottom cutout in a stone like was done at PumaPunka that I posted above.
