My 3080 12 GB is starting to struggle on the latest games (my monitor is 1440p). I was initially looking at a 5070 ti, which, as much as people like to complain about current prices, can actually be had for less than I paid for my 3080, and is much faster and has more VRAM. But then I thought that maybe I should go the "buy once, cry once" route and get a 5080. And then I started reading about issues that people were having with the less expensive cards, which are already 40% or more above the base 5080 MSRP. So after going down that rabbit hole, now I find myself thinking that I really have to have an ASUS Tuf Gaming OC, which is $1700.  It's not that I can't afford to spend that much, but jeebus man... $1700 for a GPU, when there aren't availability problems, and it's not even the fastest available? How TF did we get here? So I'm curious what you guys are buying, and whether you're glad that you spent the $$$. Or, just tell me that I'm nuts for even considering going for anything more expensive than a cheap 5070 ti. |

I bought a 5070Ti and have been using it. I'm very happy with the performance. I have a 1440p/144hz monitor and I have no problem hitting rock solid 144fps in almost every game with all settings maxed. Don't even really need the Gsync capability of my monitor anymore. I bought one of the more expensive models (MSI INSPIRE 3X OC PLUS) because it was the first one I was able to find and paid $850 for it, which was MSRP at the time. The MSRP has since increased to $930 so I don't regret it. ETA: You can probably get around $400 for your old 3080 if you sold it. So upgrading to a 5070ti might only end up costing you $400-500 in the end. |
| 5080 and 5070Ti are only marginally different in performance, like 15% IIRC. Same VRAM. I would NOT pay 50% more for the 5080. 5070Ti is around $900 for some models, so the savings are even more than that for the card you are comparing it to. |

Especially for 1440p, the 5070 Ti is already powerful enough to get you 100+ fps in just about every game. Many games significantly higher than that too. |
| I should add that the 5080 is not really a "buy once, cry once" card. It is literally half the 5090 from a silicon perspective. The 5090 is the "buy once, cry once" card. The 5080 is still outperformed by the 4090, showing that investment in a higher-level card can pay off when it is top-notch for at least two generations and serviceable for another. |

I’m curious what games do y’all play where you need that much juice? I only play mmos and other fairly low impact games, so I am not in the same ballpark as you guys but just last month upgraded my 1060 3gb to a 3060 12gb which more than suits my needs but I could only get it from Amazon Germany - there was nothing else comparable available at the time that I could find under 500. Same card is now 417 on amazon. There was no need in me getting anything better unless I got an entire new motherboard and cpu which I wasn’t willing to do because I wanted new golf clubs. But it didn’t seem like there was a ton of availability at that time. |

| I was almost sure that I was going to order a 5070 ti when I got home from work today, and when I saw this article on Tom's Hardware , I decided it was time. I got the ASUS Tuf Gaming. It was $1000 on Newegg. I really wanted the 5080; I usually get the xx80 GPUs. But in the end I just couldn't justify the price to performance difference. |

finally upgraded from my 1070. bought a used 3080 local because FUCK nvidia. my frames went from high 57-59 to mid to high 67-68.  already have more than enough ram and a decent CPU.

My shipment has been stuck in Ontario CA since the 13th. I decided to wait until today to see if it started moving, then I contacted Newegg. The following is a long-winded rant regarding my CS experience; if you want to skip this, go to the part below the underscores. The tldr is that I'm getting a refund. I tried going through the AI chat to save the phone wait time. It started well; it recognized that the shipment was probably lost and asked whether I wanted it reshipped or a refund. I decided on a refund, at which point it asked me whether I had checked around my doors for the package and asked my neighbors if they had it. You JUST FUCKING SAID IT WAS LOST. Why are you asking this??? But wait, it gets better. It then said I needed to file a police report and attach a copy.  OK, the hell with the chat, I'm calling them. They said the wait would be 6 - 12 minutes. After about 20 minutes somebody picked up... but there was no one there, although I could hear voices in the background. They then transferred me to a message saying that there was no voice mail available. FML, could it get any worse? Of course it could. I called again, and this time I selected the option to get in the queue for a callback. Only it didn't work; I stayed on hold. In the meantime I saw that there was a link on the website to get a callback. The link doesn't work. I guess I should be grateful that it got better from there. A CS rep finally picked up. She was a native English speaker, and quickly got the issue straightened out. Shortly after I hung up, I received an email saying that a refund was being processed. ___________________________________________ Since I had already decided I didn't want to deal with Newegg again, I started looking for another card. No one else had the TUF Gaming 5070 ti for a reasonable price, but I found an MSI Vanguard on Amazon for the same price ($1000). This is MSI's flagship 5070 ti, and by all accounts it's at least as good as the TUF. So that's what I ordered. It won't get here until the 1st - 15th, so obviously they don't currently have it in stock, but this is by far the best deal I've seen on that card so I decided I could wait. |

If you are going AAA titles at 4k with high settings, a powerful card is a necessity, though somewhat less so with the DLSS and FSR recent improvements. Many folks also just enjoy having high-end hardware. Unless they just recently dried up, you should have been able to get a 4060ti 16GB for around $450, which might have been a better choice. The 3060 is showing its age. |

So the Newegg shipment was suddenly found, or something, and I received it on Wednesday. I waited until today to install it. It seemed really huge when I unboxed it, but it actually isn't much thicker than my 3080. It's just over an inch longer.  Here are some quick comparative benchmarks with the Black Myth Wukong demo. This game is brutal on video cards. My old 3080 is an EVGA FTW3 3080 12 GB, overclocked to 2070 MHz from the stock OC of 1800. Windows 10, 7800X3D CPU, 32 GB Corsair 6000 RAM with timings tweaked per the Buildzoid recommendation. Very High settings, ray tracing off, DLSS off (DLAA): 3080 45 FPS, 5070 ti 62 FPS Very High settings, ray tracing on, DLSS off (DLAA): 3080 15 FPS, 5070 ti 35 FPS Very High settings, ray tracing on, DLSS Quality (67%): 3080 28 FPS, 5070 ti 61 FPS Max GPU temp during the runs was 63.7 C. Max power draw was 269W. |
